Do you see the value in diversity?

Question

Some people believe that diversity just causes discourse because of inherent differences in peoples religion, culture, language, etc, but I would argue that people will always find a reason to dislike or hate someone even if they share the same race/culture. I went to a few multicultural international schools, and I loved it. It was amazing getting to share others cultures and food, and to just meet new people I don't think I would have met otherwise. We also have to look to history to see that there have been many advancements made because of interactions between cultures. So for me there is plenty of value there.

I suppose it depends on the situation. Racial diversity doesn't bring much value unless you have common cultural goals among one another. Under those conditions variation in genetic profiles can grant resilience to disease outbreaks for example and keep common cultural goals moving forward within the greater population. In practice though, racial groups often do not assimilate and are often divided and turned against one another so that small groups can maintain control over larger groups. When you have warring factions without cultural homogeneity then you basically are trying to run a civilization which is in a constant state of civil war. On some level that can drive competition in a sort of arms race to promote work ethic to beat the other social group and to innovate superior technologies so as to promote a winning group over the losing group, but the downside is that there is always a loser.

The same could be said of religion. While Christianity and Judaism are in the same line of ethics, conflict with Islam or Hinduism will occur because the central principles of morality do not align. For example, Judeo-Christian ethics are against pedophilia where as Islam and Hinduism promote it. Judeo-Christian promote individual freedom where as Islam and Hinduism promote slavery/caste systems. The different groups will never see eye to eye on so many issues. People can have freedom of religion and control over their own thoughts, they can build their own temples, wear their own religious garbs, etc. but there always has to be one religious family that is more predominately influential over the laws of the land. Some common principles have to guide a societies morality.

When it comes to language, people need to work together and thus they need to speak the same language. Therefore language diversity is a hindrance for societies productivity and overall success. There is nothing wrong with speaking other languages to communicate with other societies, but within your own you have to be homogeneous for society to function smoothly.

Trying different food recipes is fine. So long as the nation is productive, agricultural products can be produced and sold to accommodate many different food preferences. In the event of famines, you have to tighten up a little bit and focus on survival rather than variety.

In general diversity is a negative stressors that can promote competition. It makes people unhappy, but pushes them to work harder against one another. If tensions are mild, that can lead to productivity gains and improved stand of living for the winning group. If tensions are high, it can lead to wasted resources, lost manpower, death, and destruction. It's a fine tight rope to walk.

The issue with diversity in the United States is that a certain race/ethnic demographic has a damn chip on their shoulder.

I am of the Gen X generation and remember the late 80’s and early 90’s that a large number of White people were adopting Black culture. For me, that signaled a change in race relations.

Then a portion of the Black community got together and decided that they didn’t approve of White people embracing Black culture. We weren’t doing it as an insult or being derogatory or being disrespectful.
So now when a White person “Culturally Appropriates” it is seen as being racist and not as a compliment we are now met with the newest type of racism.

When it looked like we were finally accepting each other, a portion of the Black population decided it was time to perpetuate the very thing so many Black Americans have fought to end. You now have White kids growing up and facing racism themselves. These White kids weren’t born racist, & 99.9% of them were still not racist. However, by being bullied and facing violence from 40% of the Black community, these White kids are being made into something they weren’t originally.

I personally do not have any issue with diversity, just don’t blame me for the past, don’t bully me and sure as hell don’t you make me fear for my own safety.

I have not typed out anything that l consider to be racist, but a few on here will gladly accuse me of that.

What people against diversity don't understand - immigrants are mass enticed to other countries by companies wanting workers - cheap manual labour that will do as asked or professionals that are adept and reliable. Simply as host population is neither.

This is proven with a friend who is an operations manager for 3 locations.
As he put it, it's like tearing people's teeth out to get the locals - Canadians - to do their decent-income jobs without bitching or excuses. To not call in last minute, to get them to cover shifts, etc. Whereas the new immigrants are willing and eager for work.

Continuing with Canada for example, where I live. 20 odd years ago - LONG before mass immigration started - a politician Mike Harris, of Ontario, begged the government to start doing drug & alcohol testing of people on welfare. To start giving them training to get them off welfare and benefits.

Canada - like the USA, UK, Sweden, etc. - are some of the few countries where you can be born into benefits and die on benefits and never contribute a dime to the country.

And this laziness, this contribute little to society, is why mass immigration exists.

Diversity gives people a chance to "tolerate" and accept differences in others. It teaches us that everyone has their own culture, their own core values, their own beliefs and traditions, and what we believe in ourselves is just different, not better, than others. I can assume safely that most people on here think they have better values or see themselves as a better race, nationality, or individual just because that is all they know. If you come from an insular region anywhere in the world, you don't have a chance to explore those other cultures. It's not so important to experience them, than to learn how to accept others as they are without judgment. No one is better than anyone else, really. Those who do not care to open their minds to how others are different, doing not evolve as humans in becoming more tolerant, accepting and loving people.

There are times when diversity may enhance an experience but that is not universally true. Promoting diversity just for the sake of diversity is a rather mindless approach. And promoting less qualified candidates just for the sake of diversity seems to be an ostrich-with-head-in-sand mentality. Obviously, you have a preference for diversity but other who disagree are not necessarily wrong. This a matter of prioritizing values.

Yes I see the value in diversity. And there are value in it, the problem is the is that to sjws diversity just mean black, homo, tranny, genderless or ugly female. Thats why modern games made for the woke crowd say body type A or B i stead of male or female. Thats why games made for the, often includes ugly female characters.

I see value in it as a concept. If you have great, talented people of varying backgrounds, you can make products and innovations with a greater range of market appeal. I think the studies and data that have been accumulated about this subject have pretty consistently shown that diversity is beneficial when you have a high caliber of people involved.

Unfortunately, the horseshit we're doing now is diversity without standards. You can't NOT have standards. When you don't have standards, and by logical necessity, you'll get a few excellent people, but you'll get a whole lot more charity cases. Most people cannot be excellent, by definition of the word "excellent"

I do because I personally like learning about different cultures and understanding how the world works. Because if we are going to visit other places, it’s good to understand what is respectful. Also I like food so sometimes. I just wanna taste. I like the colors and the fabric. The clothes people wear there’s a way to appreciate things without doing too much. Also. Yeah it’ll be nice to hear different music and learn about things or we can stay in our own bubbles but sooner or later we’re not going to be able to you see history.

Absolutely! Just seeing your own face, thoughts, dress, language, or any other commonality reflected in someone else is vitally important to communicate that not only are you represented.
Seeing a multitude of eclectic cultural signifiers sends the message that diversity is promoted and matters.
I've had the experience of teaching in both 95% wealthy white districts and a 50/50 split between Hispanics and African American poverty stricken districts. I KNOW the blinders BOTH those kids have FIRST HAND!! When we were teaching the Great depression, I shared my experience of my white family being on welfare and BOTH GROUPS OF KIDS challenge me with the same words "You couldn't have been on welfare, you're white!" - both groups of kids demonstrating their SHARED racism that white people don't go on welfare because they're rich.

Firstly, "diversity" is little to do with race. I know, (shock, horror!) it's more to do with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences making the team more resilient and capable to new markets and processes.

I've always found people who are resistant to change tend to be the ones who bitch about "diversity" more. Not necessarily being racists, but people who are stuck in their ways and methods don't tend to last long in the market.

People need to understand there is no such thing as a "job for life" any more. To gain the competitive edge you've got to be willing to adapt and change. That usually means bringing in different people, to do something the current staff can't. Instead of resisting, people should instead be more open to understanding.

To certain extent yes. The issue isn't so much diversity of race as it is diversity of thought. You can have people of different races, even religions, but if they share the same virtues, they will get along fine. The issues arise when people have different virtues and one thinks they're superior to the other and wants everyone to live like them.

You're thinking small scale. People will always have disagreements, of course. Like take the Maldives for instance. There are non-Muslims in the Maldives and not all Maldives people support the idea of having a Sunni nationalist state. But homogeneous nations never have any internal conflict like civil war. Countries were created so that people who shared the same culture and virtues, could have a safe space.

It is a shame that the current administration had opened the southern border and let millions of illegal aliens into the country, The costs associated with this and the damage done to countless lives has given a bad name to those who had come into America according to our laws. There are both positives and negatives at all levels. So yeah, I see value, and see loss too. Sometimes it's just neutral. Like, my parents are interracial, my wife and I are interracial. I don't see how it added any kind of value. It just is what it is.

Most of my friends are Chinese now but when I was a child they were multicultural and varied and I found I had more loving relationships when my friends were multi cultural. This could also be due to age, that now that I'm older, I'm less dependent and emotionally responsive to people. I like people of all races, but it's always the Chinese people who invite me out to social events and call my house asking to socialize and eat meals together.

I love diversity so much that when i'm in a place with a more dominant comunity i start to dislike it.

I don't want my own comunity or muslim, indians, Asian, lainos or Africans etc.

I want a bit or a lot from all of them. Living in UK an somebody tell me is English is ok, but if i start to be surounded completly by English in the place i'm then for me is becoming very boring.

I like to meet people from all of the world and know how life is there and how they are. :)
