It's so prevalent a stereotype despite no scientific evidence. How did it come out? Why has it become so popular?

because when compared to most guys, most girls are generally bad at math or any topic with minimal subjectivity e. g. science, technology, engineering etc. girls do better at languages, arts, music etc. where there's more subjectivity involved
even on statistics, only a small percentage of women truly understand the 80/20 rule whereas most women (and most men to be fair) show a blatant misunderstanding of what this stat means and naively believe "just look at the people around you" is somehow grounds to "debunk" the stat
it's a brain question... some girls are really good at math, but some girls have less aptitude for it. It's more a question of emotional makeup and training.
Males tend to succeed to the highest levels in subjects like mathematics, engineering and psychics. Roughly 1/4 of math Ph. Ds are females.

It isn't factual. The numbers are based purely on attendance of higher education. Something women in the USA were not aloud around 50 years ago. The numbers are creeping up these past decades.
Male insecurity drives these stereotypes. Many women are quite good at math and some have made major contributions to the field.
I'm not helping the cause at all.
Yeah dont know. Gender doesn't really have a say.
