I disagree to an extent. I used to be extremely involved in politics and debates (not formally, but interest-wise). I knew my points and could argue them well.

But, then, COVID happened and I saw how the lines split people in an entirely new way. Families were refusing to talk. Husbands and wives were in conflict. Kids against parents. Long-time friends ending relationships.

I started to wonder what the common denominator was, and I realized it was fear. On both sides, over different things. I realized that in politics, it's the same thing. People are being frightened into voting, not educated on the issues. They are being told that the other will "destroy everything" and "take away your (guns or healthcare)". There's no working together to find a balanced solution. No possibility that there's an idea that hasn't been developed yet that could be satisfying to everyone. I realized that I was living in terror over making the wrong decisions with dire consequences. I felt paralyzed.

Then I decided I was done living that way. I decided I would not make a decision based solely in fear or "caution". And it completely changed my life.

I now rarely look at politics, and when I do, it's objective and factual. I look at the history and the evidence and make decisions based on that. I look at the claims and I investigate source material for context. I don't listen to political commentators or any other talking head because I don't want to be frightened or emotionally manipulated into taking a certain position.

All that to say, I think there are many stupid people who are obsessed with politics, and I think there are many intelligent people who know how to study relevant information and make a decision based on their values. Just my thoughts on it.

There is no 100% accurate way to measure intellect. Choosing not to look closely at politics, in my opinion, is a sign of a higher emotional intelligence, if only because you know hearing about such things is designed to make you panic and catastrophize a future you have zero control over.

As seen in the comments here, and as seen in many discussions between many people, this statement you quote has one MAJOR issue: it does not define important terms !

It does not define what are politics and it does not define what is intelligence, when undefined, then everyone is reading terms with their own interpretations, and everyone reacts to the same terms used but with their personal definitions instead of a mutually agreed definition. As such, we think we're discussing the same ideas but it's an illusion because there is no previous agreement on what is really being discussed.

For example, the term politics, can mean several things:

• Political philosophy, as in the foundation of how we are being governed
• An ancient arena with two gladiators and a blood-thirsty audience
• A view at how our actions and thoughts are politically charged a certain way
• Etc?

Personally, I find it impossible to not think about politics in how it's defined above, because I perceive us as political animals, whether or not we realize it. Political animals in the sense that, even when we don't seem to have a political opinion, we are living in a world constantly reminding us that everything is politically significant, our ways of life, relations to people, philosophical views and values talk about politics. All the time.

I somewhat agree, I think people with higher intelligence will sooner or later be convinced its important to pay attention to. But there's also the not giving a shit factor or believing there is no hope anyway which have some sane intelligent reasoning you could put behind that. So I do expect people who properly pay attention to be more likely to be intelligent, but so many think they are doing a good job while just being indoctrinated by corporate or state run media that its not an actual correlation either.

I consider myself apolitical in the sense that political just bore the hell out of me in general, I hate having to debate with people about my beliefs though I do have a set of beliefs I wish political discussions weren’t so hostile all the time. If you’re the type of person that truly just has zero interest in politics and what’s going on around you, you’re most likely not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Everybody has a hobby. Everybody has interest in sometimes getting into the political realm is wild out there and people were crazy and they missed the point.


Depending on where you live or just simply trying to be a decent human being you have to think about the well-being of others and a lot of times not a lot of people do that so pointless to talk to them. Y

I think it's more so compartmentalizing things and controlling your emotional state better by not focusing on outside controls. Or maybe it could just be ignorance is bliss...

Either way I don't think this alone is a great indicator of anyone to do with intelligence, more so priorities.

Some people have more immediate concerns in their life like work, school, sleep, keeping a roof over their head and food on the table, taking care of their family, health, hobbies, etc. I didn't really pay much attention to politics but I just don't want the government wasting tax dollars on bullshit or freeloading bums.
