a lot of people blamed the US for instigating this attack but given that the rebels came to blows with the faction the US has boots on the ground in support of (the SDF), this is unlikely. There may be some Turkish involvement but if they were the primary instigator, the attack would have been spearheaded by the Syrian National Army (who Turkey has soldiers on the ground in support of) as opposed to HTS.
So I would say it was first and foremost the Syrian people. I'm not saying that the new regime will be better than Assad or this will make the overall geopolitical situation better, I'm just stating what I think happened.

With the speed of it happening, what else do people think it was if not the Assad regime willingly moving on? ᅠ
Overall it was a perfect storm for Assad as I understand it. Russia of course is stretched by Ukraine and Putin said Niet to more. Israel degraded Iran and it's proxy Hezbollah so another core supporter down. Iraq was giving support at a time but it seems to have dropped out.
So there were three rebel forces in the North and three in the South. Two in the north decided now was the time with Assad weak and three in the South decided to pile in on the action. The Kurds in the north seem to have tried to pile in but to be rebuffed by SNA.
Turkey seems to help HTS and SNA so I think they are top of the list. They want something done about Syrian refugees and they have never been happy with Kurds.
You can't blame Israel for piling in cause it is just sensible to destroy Syrian weaponry. It s a very long bow to blame US for Israel.
