Trending & News If you did that, the drop out level would be horrendous. You can't force a kid to learn if they don't want to. They would rather play video games and work at Wally world.
@daniela1982 A couple of towns over from where I live the School committee decided to lengthen the school day by 45 minutes. Naturally the town had to pay teachers teachers for the extra time but they felt it would be worth it. It turns out that they were right. Test scores rose dramatically the first year.
@exitseven was it the first full year post COVID?
The US congress can't even figure out if we should keep something as simple as Daylight savings time or not, and you want them to try something this serious!

No, but schools should more accountability. Students need to be able to do basic math and read at an adult level to graduate.
Totally agree!
@Caroline91 The college students I see today are the ones that were in high school during Covid. They had 2 years of Zoom on a laptop. Many cannot do basic math and they cannot write in complete sentences. I try not to fail anyone because I realize that they have been victims of a failing school system.
There was a standardized test that had to be passed before graduating high school. The teachers union put a referendum on the 2024 ballot to eliminate the test. They spent a bundle on slickly produced commercials that ran non stop for weeks before the election. The referendum passed by a narrow margin. Now there is literally no accountability in the public school system.
Many states have implemented school choice but it will never happen in a democrst controlled state.
I don't know... California has school choice and, while they don't have vouchers, just this year they initiated ESA's that allow up to $17,000 a year. I don't think colleges should be offering remedial Math and English classes. If students can't perform well enough to not need remedial classes, then I think there needs to been some other way to bring them up to speed. When my niece started college, her counselor was so surprised that she tested well enough to take a Freshman English class, as a Freshman. I think that's crazy.
@Caroline91 My daughter always struggled with math. When she went to college she had to take a competency test to see if she would need remedial math or English. I told her it would not be the end of the world if she had to take remedial math. As I waited for her to take the test I saw other students leave complaining that they had to take remedial math. My daughter came out and surprisingly she passed all the tests.
@exitseven Something to be proud of. I think they need to have the competency tests before HS graduation. Probably yearly and have remediation there.
@Caroline91 They had them here until last month. I thought it was a good idea and the property values in a town could actually rise or fall depending on the results of these tests.
Why? What's the intent of this policy change?

No. but we need to get off the stupid harvest calendar. Also, kids aren’t fully clear headed until 10am. Not 7am. And homework is complete bullshit that should be done away with.
Also lunchtime should be a course in nutrition and manners.
Sure why not.
They still will not meet the edication levels of Canada and Europe.
No. The US refuses to pay teachers a living wage as it is.
Only to farm more indoctrinated liberals so I guess 4 more years huh
that's nonsense
nope
What's wrong in it
No, what's the point?
