IQ is short for Intelligence Quotient, the ratio of your intelligence age divided by your actual age. Baseline IQ is 100, though most people, when tested, have IQs above that.

Sheldon, on The Big Bang Theory TV series, acknowledged to be a genius, stated his IQ is 198.

Many of us have taken IQ tests, sometimes in school, and sometimes online, just for fun.

Not officially, no. I took one of those online quizzes once. I scored pretty high, I want to say it was 137, something like that, with a 7 at the end. I didn’t realize it was timed though, I did it while cooking breakfast, so I probably would have scored higher if I had been faster.

And while I know myself to be a smart guy, I feel like a presumably-140+ score if I had done it in a timely fashion…that seems high. Like I don’t know how many points get deducted for being bad at math, but I’m not a math guy, lmao. Maybe I got THOSE math questions right that day, but best-of-7? Probably not😂 So I feel like an online IQ test score, plus five bucks, will get you coffee and a donut.

I was taken for some kind of aptitude testing when I was very young. They’re off in a file cabinet somewhere, I don’t have them handy and haven’t looked at them in many, many years, but I scored very highly in most areas. My weakest area was actually Motor Skills, which is funny because I turned into a decent athlete, so…. suck it, scientists😂

And then I also have results from the national standardized testing they had us do in elementary school. (That was the best day…walk in, nothing but a #2 pencil laid out on your desk, and I knew I was spared from doing times tables for at least that day, I’d rather fill in bubbles on a Scantron sheet, haha). I always ROCKED those tests, like the principal came and met with me and everything. I was almost always in the top percentile for my age group 98th/99th in most areas, and the one outlier was —you guessed it— math, where I was I think 93rd percentile (but this is during basic arithmetic years, nothing advanced).

Everyone made a big deal out of it. My third grade teacher told me that means that in any room of 10 kids, I’m probably the smartest or second smartest.

Honestly, much more telltale to me is my social intelligence. We had a class play for Thanksgiving in second grade, several performances. We had a REAL Native American kid from Oklahoma who played Chief Massasoit, for one performance, but then the other 2 or 3 times we did it when he had left to go back to OK over the holiday break, MY pasty blond ass was the one they picked as the replacement (I would be cancelled as fuck if that video got out😝).

But the point is, I got the lead role, plus played one of the OTHER lead roles simultaneously, rather than one of the other kids who were “extras.” There were three other kids like me, who were just operating on a higher level than the other 8 year olds, honestly. And we were the stars of the show, plus the authentic Native (although there’s probably something ignorant about casting a Caddo/Wichita tribesman to play a Wampanoag, but it was the 80s🤷‍♂️😂). But yeah, the other three kids and I, it’s not that we were all Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep out there, but more that we were the only ones functional enough at that age to be trusted with a multitude of lines, and just basically wouldn’t wander off and start picking our nose on stage, lmfao. Like, looking back, some of those kids could hardly talk, lmao, I can’t believe we were at the same age but so much disparity in development. I spent a lot of my childhood weirded/grossed out by my peers, lmfao, I felt like an adult looking at children being silly or disgusting. I was very young when I realized I couldn’t be around people who wipe their noses on their sleeve😷😂

But yeah, from an early age, I’ve felt intellectually “different” from others, in capacity, if not motivation. I suppose I could take a legit IQ test, but there’s not much point. I know I’m smarter than most people I interact with, so having some certificate doesn’t do much for anyone. Also, “intelligence” and “knowledge” are different things, and you could still fill many libraries with everything I don’t know. I just remain confident in my ability to perceive and analyze the world around me, that’s where I feel my intelligence is working for me the most.

I was 145 in 7th-8th grade. Of course this was decades ago when actual learning occurred.

In 7th and 8th grade, we were seated in the school library by our reading test scores. The tests only went to 12th grade reading levels (senior high school), and there were 8 of us all at the first table in the library- plus a few more on table 2- so at least 10-11 tested out at a 12th+ grade reading level in 7th/8th grade.

Our local HS has now slipped under 60% even reading AT grade level, yet alone college level.

I'm not convinced those tests are that reliable, intelligence is the ability to spot links and work out solutions to problems you've no experience of. The questions you see in IQ tests all look like ones you could learn how to solve. Perhaps that's why people score higher than expected, only those who regularly do puzzles put themselves forward to be tested.

yeah i took the WAIS test that was fucking EXPENSIVE when i was 14. i was trying to get into a super fancy pants program bc i was a huge nerd back then (did shit like the AMC 10) and my shitty school was not cutting it which i could rant about

i ticked 131-140 cause all i know is that it's above 130. i only know cause in elementary school, my parents took me to a psychatry cause my teachers told them i may be retarded. turns out i'm gifted and was just bored out by the speed of school, which is a very common thing in gifted kids in the school system.

all i can remember is the psychatrist used the term "gifted". they never told me my iq (or i didn't remember cause at the time it probably meant nothing to me). but "gifted" means 130 and up. so that's all i know.

The only 'tests' I've done are/were online. I have the impression that they tend to over rate the result to keep people pleased.

Anyhow - generally, I score high (deservedly so), but I rather find it to be a 'handicap' in daily life.

If I were dumber, I could enjoy myself better.

I know really smart people, they are smarter than me. I however did graduate high in college and had a lot of success. But I've dumb in areas that need work. I've found we all have strengths and weaknesses, were all different.

I'd be surprised one test says much other than raw processing power and speed.

No and I'm not interested in finding out. IQ tests were designed as an aptitude test for young children that were struggling in school to figure out the kind of instruction that were best for them.

They're pretty much completely useless for anything else because intelligence on actual practical things cannot be reduced to a single number. While IQ tests are generally considered to measure some forms of intelligence, they may fail to serve as an accurate measure of broader definitions of human intelligence inclusive of, for example, creativity and social intelligence.

My scores are good in those 9 field-combination and 3D model tests, but low enough not to be autistic.
Real IQ test would take several days if emotional, verbal, social... intelligence was tested. I was just one time tested for verbal IQ and this was part of long and tedious 8 hour suitability test.
I think lot of people with extreme high standard IQ scores above 160 have high deficits in other intelligence branches.

Being able to hit a ball coming at you at 90mph is a form of intelligence, being able to shoot a lizard in the eye with a bow is a form of intelligence. Being able to read body language is a form of intelligence.

No, I don't know. I used to be good at that sort of puzzle, I don't think I would be as good any more.

When I was in school the guidence counselors were not allowed to tell you what your IQ was. Thee rationale being that if it was low the kid would think he was dumb and just give up and if it was high the kid would think he was smarter than everyone else and did not have to try.
I was told I was in the bright/average range.

I've had my IQ professionally evaluated and my score was itemized scoring differently for each item.

Some of the many itemized sections included. Memory, Reading, comprehension, spelling, mathematics, problem solving, general knowledge, ability to learn new ideas and concepts just to name a few.

I know when I was younger I was tested and scored a 142. It always drove my youngest brother crazy since he scored a 141. My middle brother... he didn't quite score anywhere near there. I haven't been tested as an adult.
