I think it’s kind of silly.

First off, the whole idea of “woke” has been bastardized by the right wing. What it means to the right, vs what it MEANT to the left (like 10+ years ago…try to keep up, guys🤦‍♂️😂) are wildly different things. There’s nothing sinister about left-wing “woke.” It’s more of a state of mind of awareness and not falling for bullshit.

Right wing “woke”, that’s not even bad stuff, but it’s good stuff that bad people think is bad, to put it in elementary school level terms, lmao. There’s usually no good reason to not like whatever “woke” thing it is they don’t like, but there’s a concerted effort to find a way to vilify it. Basically like “yeah, some people will gain…. but what will YOU lose?” [dramatic music plays: 🎶DUN-DUN-DUHHHHHHH🎶]

It’s kind of a Venn diagram, but if you’re a man, heterosexual, white, or some combination of the three, you may be eligible to qualify for laughable manufactured outrage! And if you’re all three, you get a special membership to the VIP Club!

And I know it’s kind of hackneyed, the “straight white male” thing…. but it’s honestly pretty valid. Obviously it also doesn’t mean you just get handed everything. But it’s not always about the advantages you enjoy, but rather the disadvantages you DON’T face, and furthermore, may not even truly understand or even be aware of.

When I talk of “bad people”, I don’t mean it pointedly in every sense. “Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence”, and all that, right? But whether they take the cruel road or the ignorant road, it all leads them to a bad place.

Whats wrong with people of color? What’s wrong with women? What’s wrong with LGBTQ people? What’s wrong with people of different religions, or of none at all? What’s wrong with people from other countries, or who subscribe to cultures different than our own?

The answer to all of those questions is “nothing.” And there should be nothing wrong with anything that recognizes or even caters to any of those folks. That shouldn’t upset anyone. Snow White is Latina now, and they replaced the dwarves. They re-imagined a mermaid —which I remind all of you are FICTIONAL creatures until science tells us otherwise— as a Black girl, instead of (cartoon) White girl. This should upset nobody. It shouldn’t even register with you as being “off.” That’s kind of the point of the outrage against detractors, just “why does this even occur to you to be bothered in the first place? That’s weird.” How in the world is your kid worse off for seeing a Black mermaid? The actress from Snow White strikes me as a bit of a pill, but I’d be watching her act, not hanging out with the actress.

The most ridiculous one for me was Bud Light. Bud Light sent ONE CAN with a trans person on it, TO THE PICTURED TRANS PERSON, as a commemoration of Tik Tok success. This wasn’t shipped to stores. I play beer league hockey, I see Bud Light cans all week long, for years now. Never saw one that didn’t just have the usual Bud Light logo. But this wasn’t a marketing campaign of any sort, it’s not like you could go to the store and buy cans with Dylan Mulvaney on them.

This was all fresh off of them telling us they have no problem with trans people, they just want the trans-women out of the girls’ sports that the right wing has been such passionate defenders of historically, from the U. S. Women’s soccer team to jokes about the WNBA and Britney Griner’s dick. They’re just trying to “protect the kids”, it’s not about bigotry.

And then they just got wind that Bud Light, a 21+ product, a brand nobody’s kid should be having anything to do with (are you drinking around your children? 🤨) just sent an individual whose existence they don’t agree with (despite probably not even knowing who they are) a congratulatory can, like they did for a bunch of other influencers.

One of the influencers was a trans person, and y’all freaked out, and that fucking tool Kid Rock is out here in his backyard shooting cases of Bud Light with an assault rifle. Zoom in, you’ll notice none of his cans or those of any of the other performative dorks demonstratively throwing away their beer on social media had Dylan’s picture on it. There’s one of those cans in existence that was ever made, and Dylan is likely in possession of it. Never was available to customers. Bud Light did something for one person, because of that person’s social media success, not for being trans. So tell me again how it’s not based on transphobia and is just looking out for the kids, lmao.

I don’t really feel any type of way about trans people, I just broadly operate under “don’t give people shit in life for no good reason.” I’m not out here leading any movements, I’m just calling out douchebaggery when I see it. I mean, what if they DID put the cans out? Is it going to turn people trans? Lmfao, how many Bud Lights do you have to drink before you cut your dick off and call yourself Penelope?🙄🤦‍♂️😂

It’s all incredibly silly, just transphobia in general. Transphobes are just viscerally weirded out, but they aren’t comfortable saying so, so it turns into this whole gymnastics campaign of why it’s because of some more logically-based reason, in an attempt to take heat off of themselves. It’s like Psychology 101 shit, clear as day.

Anyway…. the things people claim are “woke” are almost always just “don’t be a dickhead and have a universal baseline of basic human respect for everyone.” So I kind of want to hear the honest, un-camouflaged arguments for why we SHOULD be disrespectful dickheads🤔

Do I believe in the saying? To a degree, just realistically. At BEST, 2 out of 3 people are pretty fucking stupid, probably closer to 3 of 4, and maybe as bad as 9 out of 10. So as a general rule, when I see “a lot of people” or “most people” think this or that, that in no way lends credibility to the idea, and it often has the opposite effect. I expect stupidity, ignorance, and poor character out of most humans, in some arena or another. “Majority rule” is a frightening concept to me, because that means the dumb (or at best, greedy) are unwantedly leading the smart (or at worst, virtuous). I think we’re there right now, in America.

So these boycotts CAN gain steam. We have more than enough idiots to make it happen, lmao. But it’s kind of funny that when we start taking Tesla boycotts, for Elon’s obviously shady fuckery that they try to tell us is just auditing for waste (Just lmfao if you believe that), Trump starts bitching. He even called them “illegal”, which is wild, in a supposed free market capitalist county. The rules and principles are firm until they’re inconvenient🤦‍♂️😂

I think it's important to know your audience and customer. You wouldn't try to sell pork to Jews and Muslims.

Take snow white for instance. It's a children's fairytale based on the original Disney cartoon made as live action movie. It's for kids, specifically young girls who want to be princesses and maybe older women like myself who maybe want to cosplay as snow white or Cinderella or belle etc or women who want to take their daughters to such movies and relive their childhood. Forget the political ideology and negativity.

It's the same with comic book movies. Who are they made for? Certainly there are girls who like superhero movies and comics but not in any real numbers. Any girl I know that went to see a superhero movie was going because a guy they were with wanted to see it and chris Evans or helmsworth or cavil with buldging muscles in spandex was good too.

Star wars is another. The force is female? Most women don't care for the star wars franchise, sure we've all cosplayed as princess leia with the gold bikini but that is more for our men than anything.

Beer is another. Sure skme girls drink beer but the majority of beer is drunk by men.

Same with women's fashion. Are women going to buy underwear and clothes modeled by a trans woman or a woman who looks good in those clothes, who is aged 18-30, a healthy weight and whom men see as attractive?

I get Starbucks being woke because of who their customers mostly are but what would their sales be like if they tried to appeal to white Conservative men with baristas in bikinis?

So know your audience and your customers

Overall, classic movies need to stop being remade. It's obvious that Hollywood isn't anywhere near as talented and creative as the Turner classic movie days, the scarface, godfather and seven year itch time frame. If anything, I think a lot of studios are just getting very lazy, churning out endless really poor quality movies and series, relying on existing IP, and hoping that a controversial / "woke" choice of lead actor will generate publicity and get people talking about it. Disney and Marvel are, of course, the laziest of all.

All of the Disney remakes are garbage (not that I was ever a fan of the originals, even as a small kid). The people complaining about Rachel Zegler as Snow White, are mostly old white guys, who were never going to go see it anyway. There's nothing particularly woke about crappy CGI lions, but that Mufasa movie bombed too (a lot of people went to see the previous Lion King remake but that doesn't mean they thought it was good - and the poor performance of Mufasa is a pretty strong indicator that they did not).

In most other cases where a movie or series has been criticized for "wokeness", there have been other more serious underlying problems. For example, Rings of Power didn't fail because there was a black elf - it failed because of the terrible storylines, script, acting, costumes and basically everything else.

No I don't. You can make any type of art you want whether you personally consider it woke or not, but that is not what will determine if the artist goes broke. Art is subjective, your opinions on how society should run, are subjective, all of that, so if you hate something because you think it's woke, and 500 million other people go listen to and buy the album and go to that artists concerts, the people have spoken. You declaring it woke and getting online and furiously tapping on the keys in anger, is not the be all end all. It's when the majority feel the way you do that, yes, can make something of that nature, go broke. Meaning essentially it's always going to be up to the majority of people consuming or not consuming something that will decide it's ultimate fate. And even then...years, decades, centuries later, it is well know that a new generation can love something that was once considered a failure as times and attitudes frequently change.

It's not even woke it's just broke. As Disney investor I would sue the company for embezzlement, because budget of those series and movies are gigantic and never justified with quality of end product.

The thing with the Snow White Movie, they went over-budget than usual due to Hollywood Actor Strikes, CGI Offices recovering from backlog caused by The Global Covid19 Pandemic, etc. so… That is why they didn’t make their money back.
Also I hate to break it to everyone, all these remakes suck though everyone goes out and buys tickets since the nostalgia factor is too strong for the Disney Fans. $43 million domestically and $87 million w/ $270 million in costs was never going to work…. As the industry bounces back, I’m sure we can expect more crappy remakes that don’t live up to the originals.

Yes, it Killed Star Wars which was supposedly bullet proof and unkillable but yet here we are. That was huge. Snow White is the latest but also Captain America. Oh yeah, Eternals, Captain Marvel and more. So many Disney movies and franchises dead now.

The reason Snow White failed as a movie had nothing to do with whatever wokeness they put in there (which was honestly probably just updating the story so it would be more relatable to modern children and audiences since the first film came out in the 30’s or something) it had to do with the fact that the marketing sucked ass. The reason is that companies that went woke were doing it to appeal to advertisers and access grant money. They weren't doing it to sell more product.

This is particularly true in the media, but less of the money a production makes comes from the viewer than one might expect.
