Why are they so many issues with homelessness and addiction in American cities like NYC, Portland, and Seattle?

Homeless will flock to cities because resources are closer together and usually within walking distance compared to more rural areas where a grocery store can be 10 miles away from a pharmacy. The reason it’s more noticeable in those specific cities is because they have a very large population density compared to smaller cities with less people.

The west coast cities have great weather -- never too hot and rarely very cold. They are also somewhat tolerant of the homeless so addicts from all over the US go there. NYC has a lot of homelessness because it's a large city. But it's worst in Seattle in homeless as a fraction of the population.

They are all cities run by democrats. The democrat DAs will not arrest people for crimes like shoplifting, drug dealing, public drunkenness, and other so called small crimes.

Right. Much of the US GDP comes from cities like New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, etc. All voting blue. The red states, particularly the rural counties are all subsidized by the blue cities. But read "Hinterland" for a more sympathetic analysis.

@slatyb The cities all vote democtst because that is where all the welfare recipients live. Much of the GDP does not come from the cities. All out agriculture comes from the middle of the country. All the factories that were centered in urban areas have been shut down and all the jobs were shipped overseas.
The cities are all one step away from federal receivership.

As a proportion of the population, there are far more people living on checks from the federal government in rural states like West Virginia and Mississippi. Taxes flow from the blue states to the red states. California sends a lot more money to Washington that it gets back.
