Girls what do you do if a first date shows up armed?

Ok this question comes up because guy from the hardware store shows up to deliver/install a repaired screen open carrying a pistol. No problem, no confrontation, he did his job and was on his way.

I've left open to guys to answer also so some more qualifications, and assuming this will be a mainly U. S. based conversation. 1st, I own 8 firearms myself, I'm a Veteran. Also my city borders Detroit, and though Detroit isn't what it once was, it isn't Maybury RFD. Also I'm not disputing your right to own, carry, display or use you weapon for defense. I'm asking what decisions do you think other people will make based on the legal, Constitutionally protected decision you made?

Lot of it is situational. Do yourself know enough about guns. Growing up with guns and how the adults handle guns. Friend of the family kid had a lethal cleaning the gun accident. 100 ways that can go.

From there how long before the latest mass casualty event. 100 different ways that can go too.

Then theirs how the guy is treating the gun. Is it like showing off a muscle car or Rolex watch or more nonchalant im going to work i need my work boots.

You can look like a crazy person itching for a fight to pull that ace out of the holster for a win. I paid a premium for this instant win it's fair game the rules said so.

It's almost like a giant plinko game. One side is safe other side dangerous. Even with higher gun safety one mistake is extremely dangerous. A cautious Aversion is probably for the best till you know what your doing.

Honestly I don't think women would be too thrilled about their dates carrying guns.

I am a gun owner in Europe, but in the US l still have not purchased any - a girl I frequent there owns a couple, but she's a government employee.

I wouldn't want to stick around since guns make me super uncomfortable. When my boyfriend and I first started dating he was an armed security guard that knew I didn't like it so he kindly kept his gun in his car's trunk and didn't bring it inside when he came over after work nor did he bring it on dates.

I understand that. Now I was raised with them, never in the self defense, government tyranny contect, we are hunters. As I tell people, if I have to use one of my guns to defend myself, I absolutely will, but I'm 65 and it's never come up. But a lot of people are like you they weren't raised with them, don't understand them etc. Because of that and because nobody's ever threatened me for my butter pecan ice cream at Baskin Robbins, I don't need to ruin your evening by showing up packing.

Lol I wasn't raised with them, though both my parents were MP's in the Air Force.

My fear, though, actually comes from the day I was walking with an old male friend of mine when somebody who didn't like him started shooting at us from down the street. I could hear the bullets whizzing past my ear, and it freaked me the heck out.

I have fired guns before, but that was before the incident.

I'm confident in saying that most women would walk away from this date, as discreetly as possible. Then a portion of them would call the cops, at a safe distance, because guns are obviously illegal goods. This shit is serious.

Well I don't know where you're from but in the US, guns ARE legal under many circumstances. I'm very desperately avoiding getting into should that or should that not be debate. It's been spun endlessly in this country and nobody's changing their mind. What I'm trying to do is point out that other people make decisions about you based on the decisions you make.

Ok, I no most European countries have much more restrictive laws than we do. When I was a kid concealed carry permits were very rare (didn't stop criminals, but still. Seems no in most states you can get one because you want it, (there are required training courses in my state and I assume several others) What concerns me is doesn't this result in frightened people with guns and is this really a good idea?

In my book, it's a VERY good thing to have people frightened by guns. But ofc, in how my opinion is constructed, I can't separate myself from the culture & history of my place. This culture & history has made guns something to not wish for. While for USA it is the opposite.

So, while I can intellectually understand why a pro-guns opinion exists in the USA, I'm also unable to consider it a right thing, because everything I have ever known, from childhood to now says it's a wrong thing.

This is in my mind why guns laws are so emotional in this country. The issue is less about the guns people buy and more about thy why they buy them. Since firearms came to the Americas with European settlers, (or invaders, depending on your perspective), they have been essential tools, objects of status, means of survival and instruments of power. May, not all of those roles have changed, but most of them are still deeply rooted in our culture. Again things were different during my childhood. Guns were around, but most people that used them saw them as a hobby and this talk about self defense wasseen by most as a bit over done. Most people use them for recreation, a few to make a living, rather like my bicycle today. Mostly I ride because I like, occasionally I ride to work. To my mind, fear is the through line. In the 80s you saw the rise of what is now called the "prepper", in response to the threat of nuclear war. Supposedly these people preparing for total societal collapse. Most of what they prepared seemed to be weapons. When the USSR collapsed the focus only shifted, tou our own government. The people and the actions are pretty much the same, only the rationale has changed. The thing is, the guns can be very comforting. The idea that it's the ultimate answer to ANY question. No matter how bad it gets, I can always shoot my way out is the mindset. In reality it's almost never the answer to the problem. As our economy became more top down, and threatening, people became more threatened and saw more refugees in guns. More and more, people terrified of forces they can't really identify, began to lash out with these guns. Even if you could pass gun laws in this country, I doubt they would work. The root of the problem is fear and/or economic insecurity. That where we get back to peaceful citizens, some of whom use guns recreationaly. Mass shootings a once every 2 decades even and people not preparing to fight a war amongst ourselves.

Your reasoning makes a lot of sense to me.

When looking at any culture of any country, I'm forced to acknowledge that what's deemed right and wrong isn't universal, it will depend, each time, on different people & folk. In a place where guns have been normalized, rationally or not, through centuries of history, policies, customs, life philosophy, market value, symbolical value, emotional value then...

Carrying a gun can only be right, for them, because it makes sense, to them. Within the framework they live in. And, in turn, it can only be wrong, seen through the eyes of someone living in a very different framework.

My reference to frightened people with guns as opposed to people frightened OF guns. Even with all my knowledge, experience and familiarity, in certain context, guns are very scary to me too, like if someone is pointing it at me. The idea that we just allow someone with vague fears about who knows what to wander about with a gun seems like a recipe for disaster.

My wife had some limited experience with firearms as her parents ran a Boy Scout camp. I never brought a weapon on a date, early on. And as I said I don't carry. After we got married she looked at me and said "OK, now you have to teach me to hunt deer."
I thought we'll do this one time and that will be it. She stuck with it though, she not as dedicated as me, but she still hunts and has helped me skin two deer.
