Yes. First of all, current laws essentially forbids the militarization of space which means that any space-borne assets would have to be limited to communication and surveillance. Furthermore, space dont really have anything worth fighting over. Everything we care about is back here on earth which means that at most any force would be responsible of protecting would be itself rather than a strategic objective.

In other words, the entire role of space-borne assets at this stage is limited to assisting other branches of the military on earth. Dividing them into their own military branch is just setting up an artificial barrier between them and who they are supposed to cooperate with.

Space assets should be as closely integrated into ground units as we can manage to increase effectiveness of spy and communication satellites for example which in turn means the most effective organizational structure would be for these branches of military to own them themselves. The only exception would probably be NASA which as the civilian branch of space exploration and research would probably also have a significant ownership of anything interesting enough for the military to want to play with.

I would want next president (Democrat or Republican) to demilitarize space entirely with treaties and gentle, but firm diplomacy.

When you have a ‘Space Force’ and talks of Missiles in the highest altitudes of the atmosphere , it compels other nations to follow suit and therefore raises tensions also Cold War scares of the past that got us nowhere except close to complete annihilation.

I think of Star Trek where we want a world where everyone gets along and we set aside old failed human leadership of the past and our old ways. Cooperative effort to bring intergalactic peace and improve relations with the natives we meet , though we may not share 1:1 the same values we can at least agree on the prospect of peace.
Space Force and talks of missiles doesn’t sound too Star Trek The Original Series to me.

I live near a Space Force facility and have known people in the Space Force and/or one of it's predecessors. As near as I can tell there is nothing new about the Space Force other than it becoming a separate branch, which I don't really see a reason for.

The Space Force moved existing people from the other branches, basically doing the same job they did before. It was basically just a reorganization.

I'm not really against it being a separate branch of the military if there is a good reason for it. I just don't know what that reason is. There is overlap with the work of the other branches. But that is true of the rest of the military, and government in general.

Military in space is here to stay, like it or not. That's been true for a long long time. Some of the earliest satellites were military. Some of the earliest aviation was military. Just like aviation, space will be involved in war. Several other countries have separate space force branches. If they don't have a separate branch, probably all modern military have the same functions in existing branches.

GPS is a good example of military in space. Take out GPS satellites through destruction or jamming, and you take out a whole bunch of other systems that rely on it. It's too important to be ignored.

Space force has very little to do with trump except that like all presidents he took credit for it. Congress has been exploring the idea of a space corp or space force from the 80s. So much of the US military depends on freedom to operate in space so a dedicated force is needed.

I believe that the reason for Space Force is to identify hostile missile launches and be able to destroy or divert them before they reach our borders.
So yes. I feel that it is a branch of military intelligence to have.
