It's hard to understand what's going through their heads. Especially since it's mostly them that get robbed, raped, beaten and burned alive. Not only do they cling to their policies despite this but they are vehement about it. The only thing I can think is they see Trump as backward a redneck who would oppress women and minorities. This doesn't quite make sense though because of their support for the Muslims who are truly "far right" as they like to say. I'm not even sure they themselves really know.

Maybe it's because none of those things really happen. On the other hand, various right-wing thought leaders have expressed a desire to take the vote away from women, as just one example. They already took away Roe, and it's not a stretch to see them allowing states to make same-sex marriage and even homosexuality itself illegal again..

Well, a lot of Democrats do NOT want somebody like that and do not advocate such policies.
Saying all Democrats are like that is like saying all Republicans are MAGA idiots.
Notice that there are multiple candidates for Mayor in NY including Democrats running as independents.

But, one thing is clear that may not be obvious. NYC is now majority minority meaning that White Christian folks are not the majority in NYC. Since the demographics have changed toward the "off-White", Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani will get a lot of "off-White" votes and those are the majority in NYC.

So, perhaps this isn't a Democratic thing as much as it is an ethnic thing.

I wanted to add something. Today's release of the NYT/Siena College poll on the NYC Mayoral race has Mandami at 46% of the vote. While he leads, that's not a majority. So, he may win by virtue of a plurality. That's how Bill Clinton won in 1992 since Ross Perot was a strong 3rd Party candidate.

It's also how Trump won in 2024. He got less than 50% of the vote.

@goaded Had Harris won, it likely would have been a plurality too. Trump had 49.80% of the vote which is essentially half of all voters. Harris had 48.32%. The DEMs definitely fucked up the election - like they always do.
The remaining voters went to the other candidates - candidates that leaned left. Had they dropped out, Harris might have won, but I won't say definitely because she was something of an unlikeable candidate (although I voted for her because ... well... the alternative) so those "Other" voters might simply have skipped the election. They are one reason why Trump lost in 2020; conservative voters fed up with him who wouldn't vote for Biden either.

If you strip away the people and just look at the platform and such, nobody could support the political right. It's policies and directives defy any sense of humanity. However, few conservative politicians actually support their party's full platform. They support parts of it while they're either centrist or liberal on other issues. Liberals, on the other hand, or liberal on most issues and may only be conservative regarding spending (since they drive up the national debt less than conservatives). So, people vote for democrats because they know that their platform is actually good and if someone holds to it, they can actually make positive change.
