Part of being intelligent is being humble enough to recognize the possibility of error, so they often "double-check" or revisit what they think.
There's an old adage that goes something like this:
The fool is always trying to prove he is right, while the wise man wonders if he may be wrong.

AI Overview
This statement highlights the fundamental difference between prideful ignorance and humble wisdom, often attributed to the contrast between fools and wise men found in philosophical and biblical literature.
Key Aspects of the Quote:- The Fool (Stubbornness & Ego): The fool is defined not just by lack of knowledge, but by a refusal to learn. Driven by arrogance and self-righteousness, the fool trusts their own judgment implicitly, viewing their way as "right in their own eyes" and rejecting correction.
- The Wise Man (Humility & Growth): Wisdom is marked by the ability to accept that one might be wrong. A wise person welcomes correction because they see it as an opportunity for growth, rather than a threat to their ego.
- The Core Mechanism: The "wise man" knows that self-awareness is limited and actively seeks advice or "counsel" to refine their own understanding, whereas the fool sees no need for outside input.
Source and Similar Quotes:
- Proverbs 12:15: "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice".
- Shakespeare: "The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool".
- Ali ibn Abi Talib: "When proven wrong, the wise man will correct himself and the ignorant will keep arguing".
Ultimately, this quote suggests that growth does not come from winning debates, but from refining one's own mind.

1 moMost people operating at higher cognition or are considered “genius” have a skewed distribution when it comes to their intellectual profile. You can have very high processing speed when it comes to numerical and logical reasoning, but operate at a below average processing speed when it comes to verbal reasoning. It’s rarely flatlined like they depict in the movies in which geniuses are great at everything.
Most people in the upper percentiles of intelligence have a skewed profile like I’ve explained, so it makes sense that a lot of them are also considered neurodivergent.
Social conditioning plays a factor. If you can’t participate in normal social development as others do, you become ostracized and anxious. You feel behind in the world that’s around you, because that’s all you’ve experienced. This would be bound to cause cascading effects into other areas of your life. As the highly intelligent become older and wiser, they are able to recognize their abilities because they have found a like minded peer group, and have had time to realize their capabilities in their career and other areas of life. That imposter syndrome at time still lingers though.00 Reply

1 moYou've got it the wrong way round. Doubt is what makes you intelligent in the first place. Any fool can doubt others but it's another level to question your own beliefs and ideas.
Try a simple mind experiment. Think of a simple question then what ever the answer is ask why? Then why again. Most people don't get far
Why is the sky blue?
Blue light travels in shorter waves and scatters
Why?
I don't know.
Hence you now doubt the sky is blue01 Reply- 1 mo
The sky is blue because that's how we define blue. Zero doubt there.

1 moIntelligent people doubt their own intelligence. Intelligent people just don't always want to be told "you're so intelligent". What you see as intelligent feels normal to an intelligent person, so constantly being complimented about it is annoying. For example do you have big boobs? If so, what would you think if everyone you met in your daily life said, "wow you have such big boobs"? You're probably be like what the hell is wrong with you. Same goes for intelligent people. We know we are smart, but you don't always have to dwell on it.

*"don't doubt"
That's a pretty bad AI correction. It changed the entire meaning to tell you what you want to hear rather than what was communicated. Trash software. - 1 mo
*You would

So if you are heavy on the flattery, they will probably be like "I'm not that smart" or play humble as a way to communicate to you to cut it out and to treat them as a normal person. They just want to fit in and live a normal life.

A truly intelligent person is inquisitive and keeps an open mind. Stupid people, even if they have high intelligence, are arrogant, think they know everything and are smarter than everyone else.
I have known some people with doctorate degrees who were really stupid but were full of themselves.20 Reply
Anonymous(45 Plus)1 moI don't know about most people but, for me, it's kind of a "fear" of possibly being wrong. Most of my young life I was told that I'm stupid when my IQ is almost borderline genius, my own grandfather once called me a slow learner when I'm completely the opposite, if ever I said anything that was maybe slightly wrong, I got lambasted for it and told I was an idiot as if I was COMPLETELY wrong, nothing I did was ever good enough to please everyone so, you get a bit of an inferiority complex that causes you to question your own intelligence. Even if you know you're right, you kinda feel you HAVE to make an "excuse" for possibly being wrong.

1 moBecause a big part of what makes someone intelligent is sorting out what you know from what you're unsure about. And calculating how accurately you can predict an outcome from that.
Someone who's unintelligent rarely knows what they don't know. But intelligent people are actively looking for what they missed or don't know that could change a situation.
00 Reply I think for me it is a humble thing yet not fully recognizing it because there’s still so much to learn and I’ve met so many very, very intelligent people as well. Some remains humble as me or others may be quite arrogant unfortunately. I don’t think “doubt” is a positive framing nor mentality. We can still maintain humbleness by being neutral, mindful, and respectful. I much prefer to be inspire, mindful, appreciate, and uplift others vast intelligence.
00 ReplyBecause intelligent people aren't set on what they know but are set on quite the opposite, they are always looking at what they don't know, or trying to figure out something they haven't, they aren't busy trying to prove a point of who knows what, which is how they reach an intelligent mind in the first place.
