I believe there is a Latina mother here that sometimes posts about her hatred of physical punishment. She even hates the word chancla and calls sandals something else. My parents never hit me but we're all white Americans so that's more common. Then again, I was shy as a toddler and naturally easy going so, never headstrong. Maybe that makes things easier. I'm now hearing some Hispanic/Latino parents are copying from us too, abandoning their old-school parenting.
Is this a new growing trend among them now? Are you surprised? I've personally stumbled a Latino family that hates physical punishment. The man doesn't visit his father too much for that reason. He doesn't feel any gratitude towards getting raised that manner. He hated it and still hates it. Neither him nor his wife ever used belts nor flipflops on their 2 kids.

Hopefully our numbers will continue increasing. It's a great progress. Nowadays it's nothing new. More people have been getting more educated across countries and studies have already proven corporal punishment is a negative practice. I'm tired of people saying they have great careers thanks to their spankings. Nope. You have a good career in spite of that terrible fear-based compliance upbringing. It's a result of either money available to pay for your classes or your own abilities and skills (ex: getting a scholarship), as well as having access to practice on your major.
Corporal punishment on kids will always have my total disapproval.
Goodbye old-school, good riddance.
I'm not really surprised. Parenting changes with every generation, and people are always picking up ideas from other cultures.
I also wouldn't assume every Latino family uses physical punishment or that white American families don't. Every family is different. Some parents were raised with spanking and decide they want to do things differently with their own children. Others grew up without it and still believe in stricter discipline.
Personally, I think the interesting part is that more parents are questioning things they were simply told were normal when they were kids. You can respect where you came from while still deciding that you want to raise your children differently. ❤️
It's the stupid stereotype of the angry, fearful Latina mother making the rest of us look bad. They even make jokes about it. That's why people think we all use physical punishment on our kids. Negative overgeneralizations suck.
I was just thinking the other day that the Latinos in the area where I live tend to be very respectful towards children. I was thinking this because I know so many of them and I see it all the time in how they treat their kids and grandkids. There are of course exceptions but from what I can see most of them are very conscientious in raising children.
not surprised. thankfull to have allies for various children rights i promoted. no 'sandal slap' allowed. no desert for a week is a punishment. kid could lose allowance. can't do fun stuff those are punishments.
I can't stand people that defend fear-based compliance practice and even worse are those making the rest of us look bad by claiming that's Latino culture, pride (making disgusting jokes about it).. as if that was some rite of passage or achievement to be proud of. One day I guess we'll break that negative stereotype. I see nothing funny nor to be grateful about getting hit.
Wasn't aware it was ever an issue
@Paige2006 neither was I
