How would you describe the concept of double standards?

[thegreenyogi]

And how many people have you encountered that live by double standards? Do you live by double standards?

[msc545]

A double standard exists when people are judged by different rules despite being in essentially the same circumstances. Behavior that is considered acceptable, or even admirable, in one person may be criticized or condemned in another, not because of any meaningful difference in what they did, but because of who they are.

Double standards often reflect personal biases, social prejudices, or differences in power and status. They are not necessarily intentional. People may apply them without recognizing that they are doing so.

The important distinction is that treating people differently is not automatically unfair. There may be perfectly legitimate reasons for doing so. The problem arises when the circumstances are substantially the same, but the standards used to judge them are not.

Ultimately, a double standard amounts to applying a principle selectively rather than consistently. It allows people to excuse behavior in some individuals while condemning the same behavior in others. In doing so, it undermines the very idea of fairness.

Thank you for MHO.

Hypocrisy. Almost everyone has done some of this at some point in their lives. There are of course egregious examples of this on the societal level. Priests abusing little boys and the church moving them elsewhere to help them keep out of trouble? Politicians or civic leaders that claim the moral highground such as marital fidelity or claims of being corruption free and then being found to be more filthy than those they accuse... it's a very common thing unfortunately

[Ill_made_Knight]

Thanks miss

[thegreenyogi]

Welcome!!

[Maybe_Maybe_not]

As a foreign expression I don't face often, the sound of it catches me more than its meaning, so I would describe "double standard" as somewhat funny sounding. Probably because it reminds me of "double entendre", one that sounds really weird to me, as the Franco-English offspring it is lol

[Maybe_Maybe_not]

For the fun of it, in my language, "double standards" translates as "two weights, two sizes", an expression I don't see often either, except in serious news articles or something

[thegreenyogi]

What is your language?

[sage2021]

I've had bosses and other people in my life and they were the type who lived by the saying "Do as I say, not what I do". So it was okay for them to break the rules but not the other people around them.

I don't live by double standards.

[Shiprex]

Things like where young people are expected to be fit and healthy and able to do endurance activities while older ones are given a break. Fitness is something that is ageless.
Alternatively, when it comes to natural disasters or emergency situations, the leadership is often placed on men who may or may not be just as or more petrified and distressed than anyone else.

[Anonymous]

Fat girl, who honestly knows she's fat, but wants to date a fit guy. She's not attracted to her kind. Which is understandable, but is the very definition of, "double standard".

Oh yeah, humanity is rife with double standards now, men and women. Because most people today are very narcissistic. They look at people like products. Women look at guys as just an accesory like shoes or earrings and guys look at women as just a f*** toy. It's unfortunate, but welcome to 2026.

[Dr_Dixon_Cider]

Ah, the ole "rules for thee, but not for me" groups of people. We live in a world that seems smothered and covered in that gravy.

[Cidknee]

There are some cops this way. They are the biggest wrongs that can be. When they break the law there is no law. The thin blue line protects them all. The "No tell" on fellow officers rule.

[Staximus]

The local cops back in the 90’s giving me speeding tickets and then driving 100 mph for no reason, drag racing each other in their squad cars, etc

[loveslongnails]

Rules for thee, but not for me,
In other words,
The G. O. P. !!!

[LeoTheCar]

NNN is a double standard because it only applies to guys.

[eagle1951]

some gets to do something , they say you can not do
