Drowning newborn puppies?

Question

My stepdad has stated that in the 70s/80s, his family had an unexpected litter of several puppies. Apparently they lived in the country with a male and female dog, didn't have the money to get them fixed/neutered, didn't have people to sell/give them to. His mom and dad instructed him to drown the puppies. He put them in a plastic bag and drowned them.

He didn't say anything else. Am I the only one who thinks this is completely f***ed up? It's all their fault, keeping two dogs that were perfectly capable of reproducing, then oops... they have babies. Then you drown them? What is the logic?

That's terrible. When I was 19 I was walking down by the river north of my house and I found a cat carrier in the middle of the river with a dead cat inside. Apparently the owners no longer wanted the cat so they pitched it into the river locked inside it's carrier. I ended up pulling the thing out of the river, tearing the carrier open, and burying the cat just because I couldn't stand the thought of leaving it there. The poor thing had it's mouth and eyes wides open. I have two cats of my own and the thought of someone doing that to an animal is devastating to me.

All I can say is you better hope nobody reads this and comes to track down your step dad. This is a felony and your step dad and anyone who played a role would see jail time for this. Most likely the would also be convicted on multiple counts of animal abuse. One for each dog they killed.

:( it's f***ed up...people can be so cruel... reminds me of how this one boy in my grandma's hometown was born mentally retarded so they just locked him up in a room and only let him out at night because people thought he was contagious. he died in that tiny little room :/

That used to be a common and widely accepted means of getting rid of puppies and kittens. It's awful. And psychologically damaging, I would imagine.

that's common. with kittens too. is it sick and illogical? yes,but people rarely think about animals as living beings,they just do it.

There is no logic there, just cruelty.  To suffocate and drown helpless animals is very selfish and cruel.  Personally I wouldn't do it and if I were in such a situation where I couldn't at least get one of them spayed/neutered then it would be a lot easier to give one dog away to someone than it would be to keep killing helpless puppies from so many litters.  That would be my logic.  Clearly they were selfish and didn't place any value on the lives of those animals.

I know right. apparently my uncle had to drown a bag of kittens. it's a horrid thought. I'm just glad there's an SPCA now.

anytime I know someone has new kittens I do my best to convince them to get them "fixed"

its kinda common out in the country to get rid of something that would be a burden, the monetary cost, can't give em away, can't let em run free, better than leaving them to starve
