I had a friend that played in the NFL. After he played for a couple of years he came back for a while and we trained together for a few weeks one summer, I asked him about the life and he told me how awesome it was. He probably played 8 or 9 seasons and retired.

Depends on the athlete I suppose. Probably less happy when their career ends.

Yes, the guys that are the happiest find life after playing. They go into coaching of sportscasting not because they need the money but to be engaged. A few go into business or politics. The guys that just sign autographs do not fare very well.
