this is a very difficult question to answer, mainly because the rules have changed over the years, but looking back over the years for viewing pleasure, in the men's game, I would have to say Ron Laver, he won the grand slam twice, he was barred from Wimbleton at his peak because he turned pro. for five years,
in the woman's Margaret Court, nee Smith, if she could have only held her nerve she was unbeatable and on both men and women back years ago there was no breaks olay had to be continuous,

winning a lot of championships don't mean that much, you have to look at whom they were against,
get away from the so called top four and you haven't got that much around, Borg was a good champion, look who he had to beat, but haven't won as much as Nadal
