Sometimes I worry about snakes when I'm hiking or doing stuff in the garden. My Dad has had to removed two rattlesnakes from our yard. One last year then one the year before. I'm pretty creeped out about it. Tell me about your experience with rattlesnakes please.
I've run across a few, but I've always seen them a ways off and given them a wide berth.
But even if I hadn't, rattlesnakes let you know that they're feeling threatened BEFORE they strike- not a lot of animals of ANY kind do that, much less snakes. That's a level of politeness (and efficiency, since venom is biochemically very expensive) that I like to see in a reptile. I'd be much more worried about the snakes that don't warn you.

I leaned over a rattlesnake without realizing it once while climbing up a scree slope. Fortunately it didn’t bite.
Never a rattlesnake, but I’ve come across few copperheads, a couple water moccasins (cottonmouths), and lots of harmless king snakes and various garden snakes. I suppose it wouldn’t be hard to come across a rattlesnake if I really wanted to since there is an annual “rattlesnake roundup” about two hours from where I live. At least one person gets bitten every year 🤦♀️
Our street has a lot of them but theyre usually dead already and being attacked by buzzards

I was in a military school learning how to patrol in Florida. It was in late November. About 35 degrees. I almost stepped on an eastern diamondback rattler. Because it was so cold it moved slow. I was able to jump back before it even rattled. I would have stepped ON it if I hadn’t seen it. Scared the crap out of me. I told the instructor and the students around me. The instructor captured it and they kept it in their snake museum to show students for later classes.
another time I was in Texas. I was walking along the stream on a high bank. I was looking for a place along the bank to go down to the stream. I found one area where there was a slope. I was about to slide down the slope to the stream about six or 7 feet just as I was about to lower myself over the edge. The top corner of the bank gave way and I started to fall. I was able to grab the top of the bank and they look down at the stream and there was a water moccasin coming out of the water at me. Thankfully, I was able to pull myself up and get away.
Luckily, there aren't any rattlesnakes in my area. Although, there are areas within 2-3 hours of here with rattlesnakes. The only time I ever saw one in the wild was when I was hiking in southern California and I walked by a juvenile one (about 24-30 inches long) within 3 feet of me when the person behind me spotted it. It was pretty chill and was just sitting in the shade away from the heat of the sun. It didn't even make a noise or get in a defensive position at all. Here's a pic of it...
Several times, in the desert area... first time I recall, I ran over one on an atv, it was laying in the trail. Another time there was on on a large sand stone rock next to the trail and I sped by.
When I have been doing desert hiking, I listen for the rattle sound very carefully, in case I get too close.
I simply give them lots of space, to avoid any problems.
I am half native and some of the tribal members like to catch them and eat them on tribal lands.
If you find one there will likley be more i ran across 3 last year they do not lay eggs the have live birth and the little ones are a bit more dangerouse because they are so small and fast
I do a lot of hiking and I do run across them sometimes. If they sense that you are keeping your distance, they normally don't get all that nervous. But yes be cautious and definitely give them their space.
Not here in the UK. But once ate some at a country fair in Kissimmee Florida
I’ve never run in to one but my uncle grew up in the DR and he used to hunt and eat them as a kid. Running around barefoot like one of the native boys he was raised with. He loves rattlesnake!
I have! Several times growing up when I was in the woods and several times out running in the last few years. I steer widely around them.
I have a few times while hiking. I stay away from them, and we all go on our way.
Many many times. I just avoid them or walk around them. They let you know that they are there.
