In my opinion, I'd stay away from laptops with Intel Celeron's and older AMD A-Series, they can be painfully slow and usually have the ram and storage soldered to the motherboard making it impossible to upgrade.
This if you can afford it

Thank you! Those are both GREAT recommendations. I like them both!

In my opinion I'd pass on the Lenovo, that n4020 only has 2 low performance cores which is going to cause a lot of headaches. I'd get at least a Intel i3 or a AMD Ryzen 3, preferably Ryzen 3 over i3 since it's has better graphics and usually better performance per watt resulting slightly better battery life.

I'll try to pretend I understand what you mean !! Lol thank you

+1 yGet a Lenovo or a MacBook air
Lenovo is cheap and I've dropped mine so many times, it's crazy. Also, mine is kinda expensive so I got their warrenty, they will stick by it if something goes wrong. Can tell you from experience.
MacBook air, is a little more expensive but you'll never have to worry about any of that stuff and you can write on it in pencil and it comes off with an eraser. Made from metal so it's pretty durable.
I used to keep important notes on mine by the mouse pad.
Hp is another good brand. Even if you buy refurbished. Also fairly durable.
The surface is a good one if you have the money to spend
Stay away from Dell, especially if it's cheap.
I wouldn't buy anything used/refurbished from acer, Dell, etc.

That laptop is very low on storage. 64 gb will go very quickly if you're saving anything on there except school stuff.
+1 yIf you only need more storage, buy a portable USB hard such as Toshiba Canvio Basics 2TB Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0. If you are not satisfied, Newegg. com has a 30 day full price return with free shipping. That what I did. I had it for 2 years without a single problem.13 Reply- +1 y
It doesn't much matter where you buy, whether Dell, Amazon, or Walmart. They are all going to be very similar. Walmart probably has a 90 day return and Amazon 30 days.
This is one possibility: www.amazon.com/.../ref=sr_1_5
Walmart has something similar for a few dollars less. The following is a used on eBay for $120 and the seller has 100% positive feedback. That means you can return it because doesn't want a negative feedback.

64GB doesn't seem like much storage. However, if that is sufficient for your needs, that should be okay.

Thank you, that Acer one got me all hot and sweaty
+1 yDepends on your course requirements. I had a very basic cheap Acer while in uni, still works and my mum is using it because that was enough for what I needed. My sister however had a fancy spec alienware gaming laptop because she needed something that could handle things like rendering and Photoshop.

Oh yeah, no bells and whistles for me either.

+1 yIt’s hard to say there are so many options if I were you I would research the amount of ram aka storage you think you need and good processors then decide because for school you need both you could get a computer with a lot of storage but if the processor is slow your computer will freeze up eventually
10 Reply1.4K opinions shared on Technology & Internet topic. HP or Dell make very durable and dependable laptops. You can custom order directly from Dell's website. I would suggest looking at all the processors and buy the second most expensive one. You can always add memory or get a bigger hard drive if you need it but the processor cannot be changed.
11 ReplyI have a MacBook Pro, but it's expensive. I got it a few years ago, still fast because of the CPU I have, plus the amount of memory by speed. I thought it was worth the investment because it worked for me on what I needed for editing, special apps, etc. I think Apple is good for basic and particular advanced needs. I still use it every day and works great still. Though Lenovo is a good laptop and HP too, some are pricey. Get something that has at least 16GB (or more) RAM and a good CPU.
10 ReplyLenovo has some really nice laptops for school. This is the kind of thing you should be asking google about, because they'll have a bunch of reviews and stuff that will help you figure out what you actually need your computer to be able to do.

@Whatthefluff that computer is probably not going to have enough power for you, feel free to message me. I can help point you in a better direction
An you're right in picking the right computer for the right price and expandability. I personally would go with a Samsung Toughbook they go through hell and keep working. Trust me after using them in Iraq and Afghanistan as USAF PJ

Seems a little bulky for me but that's impressive!

I will keep that in mind when I purchase my next laptop, sir.

+1 yThe right laptop is the cheapest Chromebook. Because only millionaires and Indiana Jones actually need a high powered or "gaming" laptop.
Just get a desktop.16 Reply- +1 y
How am I supposed to run around on all my romantic journeys with a desktop? ! ? !
- +1 y
you don't have any romantic journeys. and you can bring a tablet for travel because it's pretty clear you don't use computers for much more than Internet.
- +1 y
Ok but I do travel with my laptop !!
- +1 y
But it the only thing you're doing is going on the Internet then just get a tablet. Venturer 10" 32GB Storage 2GB RAM Android is really cheap at $80 and you can surf the web and download stuff. Get a USB stick and you can upgrade the memory.
I definitely need something high powered because I'm a game dev, but the majority of people just look at the Internet. - +1 y
But I need a beautiful keyboard!
- +1 y
plenty of tablets have "beautiful" keyboards
+1 yDescribe your college work.
My friend is in Mechanical department of Engineering and he got himself a simple standard laptop, with lower medium specs. I along with my other hostel friends told him to change it as he would be requiring a pretty solid specs one for his department in 3rd year of his degree.
So describe your college work.03 Reply- +1 y
Get at least 8GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD, not HDD. Get a 720p front cam. And Intel i5 or greater. Or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or above. Do not forget, the laptop must have a graphics card. The internal CPU graphics processing will not be enough when you are to play games on your laptop.
And Windows along with Office preinstalled or if you are comfortable, then not operating system loaded. The laptop will be cheaper that way. And then you can install Ubuntu on it. - +1 y
I'm just a psychology student. Will need storage space as I am taking several classes next (my final) semester. If I continue education after my associate's, I'll want the computer to endure the additional 2-4 years that takes.
- +1 y
Then any Chromebook will work.
But do not try to get a laptop in the Chromebook's price.
The Windows OS license, along with the lifetime Office license will alone take up the cost.
You will get HDD which is really slow.
My suggestion would be to buy a few year old refurbished laptop that was leased to a business.
There are several places selling refurbished Lenovo T470, T480 and T490 laptops. They are well made and seem to last forever !!!10 ReplyWhat is the price range that you have available for a computer?
16 Reply- +1 y
Cheap as possible lol. 300 or under
- +1 y
Bestbuy. com has back to school sales right now on laptops/chromebooks. It is only valid through July 10th though.
I don't know, personally I wouldn't buy anything if your Chromebook is still able to use the internet okay and whatever else you actually need it for. I'd just wait until you can afford a real laptop, like at least an AMD with a Ryzen 5 or higher processor. Then get an external DVD player to go with it since most computers now don't even come with a disc drive.
Chromebooks really can't do a lot by comparison. - +1 y
I'm not sure exactly, it's just a basic chromebook from around 2015
- +1 y
Thanks for your advice! I'm just finishing up CC this Fall, but if I get into a bigger university, I think I'll reward myself with a "fancier" device. Someone recommended those laptops with touchscreens, and those are nice to work with.
I do looooooveee the keyboard on my Chromebook. It's the perfect size and texture. :) Would not settle for anything unlike my current keyboard ~.).~
+1 yI suggest you to go with Lenovo Ideapad or the Gaming version of the laptop, if you are also into gaming, bro. I am using one for both gaming and studies, works great with rendering, editing and media apps too.
I use Brackets and/or Wordpress for web design along with Adobe Photoshop, for example and it renders and edits way faster than "basic" laptops.
Of course, it's your budget and choice bro.
But still, i'd say give it a try. :)00 Reply- 1K opinions shared on Technology & Internet topic.
+1 yI think MacBook Pro or Air is your best bet but they are pricey, maybe an older one or refurbished one is cheaper but they last years without trouble if you take care of them, my daughters still use theirs in school for the past 5 years and I have one for 10 years and still accepts software updates , I gave up on windows type, IBM , too many issues and slow
00 Reply Macbook air m2. For any non power user tasks this is the best laptop. It can be specced up to 24 gigs but 16 is plenty. 8 would probably do fine as well tbh. I’d say get that with 16 gigs and a terabyte if possible and you’ll be in heaven, best laptop for your needs. It’ll hold it’s own for 5-10 years easy, this redesign is so good
