I wanna add onto this to be careful when buying "gaming laptops" I had a friend who bought a quite pricey Asus (I'm pretty sure) gaming laptop that only had 4GB ram š¬ luckily it wasn't too difficult to upgrade it ourselves

I second this. I have an Asus laptop that I used for both work and gaming. Still works greats years later

@Smashingdoozy Good point. The term "gaming" has become meaningless marketing BS when it comes to computer hardware. If you don't know what you need, ask someone who does know and has no financial interest in your decisions. 4 GB RAM will choke most processors just by web surfing.

1 yEntirely depends on what games you're playing and how bulky you're willing the laptop to be.
A laptop is always gonna be worse for gaming than a desktop pc.
In general avoid anything Celeron, try go for i5 or above processor, at least 16GB of RAM.
The MSI GF63 is an inexpensive good option and the Lenovo Legion 5 slim 14 (more expensive) Both are very portable but with being portable comes issues with cooling so you will need a cooling tray/mat when gaming and try not to have it sitting directly on you bed or lap as much as possible.

@exitseven thanks, burnt my lap far too many times playing sims šš

@Smashingdoozy I brought a laptop I got at work on a vacation to Canada. It got so hot I had to get a pillow off the bed and put it on that.

@exitseven yes it's quite scary how hot they get
Depends on the games. I still use a computer I built like 5 or 6 years ago because it runs at a decent enough frame rate, and my favorite games are zomboid, 7DTD, and The Sims 4. Those are super snappy on it, and other games chunk along alright.
I use a used laptop from nearly a decade ago for streaming, browsing, and reading books. I mean, for school you could use a cheap ass chromebook, or buy something from a PC repair shop on the cheap.
I would highly recommend a desktop for the gaming. It will be insanely cheaper and more powerful to buy even older stuff, compared to the lower power you would get for thousands on a laptop.
You only really need the laptop for school work, you aren't playing games in class or in the library... I hope.

1 yAsus is a pretty well-known brand for gaming laptops, and one of the best for long-term usage. Iāve been using lenovo and while itās a great laptop (the one I have and use currently is about 10 years old and still runs pretty well) in terms of gaming itās not the best as thereās pretty limited gig storage. If you want one for bigger games like the sims or something else, make sure to check the size of the gig storage. You probably want one with a lot of memory but be warned, it can be pretty pricey

1 yWithout knowing the games you want to run (as well as any other software you might need for classes depending on what you're studying) and your budget, we can't make an informed recommendation. You could get a perfectly serviceable little laptop for $300, or maybe even less, that can handle all the web browsing, email, and office tasks you need, and get you by in most 2D games (plenty of great ones out there) and some light 3D titles with modest graphics settings. Or you could blow 10x that, or maybe even more, on the latest and greatest gaming devices that'll push ultra-high frame rates on the newest AAA games with everything set to maximum, as well as making light work of CAD modeling (for engineering, architecture, and the like) or pretty much anything else you could throw at it. Most likely the right option for you is somewhere in the middle, but we need to know what your requirements are to find the balance.
00 Reply1.9K opinions shared on Technology & Internet topic. Those are two very different specs.
A "school laptop" should be cheap and light, as you're going to be carrying it everywhere and probably break it once or twice in the year.
A "gaming laptop" is a heavy beast that you're not going to carry much and it's not got much battery life either in most cases.
So I would recommend you look at your budget and get two laptops. One second hand for maybe 200 bucks for school, and a Ryzen 7 with RTX 4060 for gaming.

1 yTwo different machines. School/Business PCs need much less CPU/RAM. If you shop around you can likely find a suitable laptop for school for less than $500 esp. if you're will to have a Chromebook and have a few flash drives. You definitely don't need Windows so why [pay the premium. Gaming computer requires much more speed bandwidth than school/biz PC. If it were me I'd buy a Chromebook for school for about $275 and then save for a Gaming pc. If you generally play games at home you might be able to save some $$ with a desktop. Also look into PCs that have capacity to upgrade.
00 Replyfor school, you usually don't need much, just light stuff. but for gaming, you need something heavier. so two opposite sides of the spectrum there. these will be expensive, just to warn you.
i think asus is pretty good
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14
Dell XPS 15
Acer Nitro 5 - a little more budget friendly, maybe lol
Lenovo Legion 5
HP Omen 15make sure to look for at least 16GB of RAM and a dedicated GPU

1 yI use Nitro 5 acer.
Very satisfied. It serves reliably and is suitable for learning and for games and for programming. And the price is not too expensive.
When choosing a laptop, you need to understand that any laptop is suitable for school/university studies. But few are suitable for games.
10 ReplyI have had the best experiences with AMD processors.
What games in particular are you wanting to play?
What is your budget range and what price range would be easy for you to afford while still getting some games too?
Using it just for school and internet/YouTube is easy and the majority of computers can easily handle that so it mostly comes down to what kinds of games you want to play and your budget.

1 yAs you ''don't know much'' - you will not even notice any performance differences.
Make sure that it's not a ''chingchong'' made-in-China garbage, but an established brand.
It won't last forever, but by then you will have figured out what your preferences are.
Gaming: avoid entertainment features such as ''keyboard lighting'' or other ''design'' features that are good for nothing.
00 Reply If you are familiar with Apple, stick with them.
If you want a Windows computer, read some reviews online and see what your friends use and are happy with. Some games take a lot of recourses, so you may want to speak to a local computer place that can steer you in the right direction.00 ReplyI use Linux for work and mild computer gaming, it works well enough, the main thing you wanna focus on is a good cpu, gpu is nice but really only helps make things look more pretty, and for a laptop that shouldnāt be your concern.

1 yPeople saying get two different laptops just for school and gaming is absurd. Get a gaming laptop and do schoolwork on there. Just get extra storage (SSD or HDD) to store your schoolwork in. I have an Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop and use it for both gaming and schoolwork.
10 ReplyDepends on screen size. you're obvi set on a gaming laptop so graphics card must be top notch. I just bought a mini 10ā gaming laptop I also use for design and travel. Then I packed external terabyte ssdās.

00 ReplyYou need a laptop for school. If you are serious about studing, you should not have time for anything else, like gaming. My daughter used a MAC and was very happy with it for school.
