Do you repair or maintain your electronic devices by yourself or hire people for it?

I have started maintaining my laptop by my own now. The image you see is after I am finished applying thermal paste on CPU and GPU. Cleaning has also been done.

I have decided to do all of this on my own rather than taking it to a shop where they charge for a simple task as inserting a RAM stick in a slot, for which, on my laptop, I don't even need to open the backcover. Not to forget the overpriced RAM sticks they try to sell.

Just watch some YT videos very carefully. And with the right equipment, you are good to go.

Although I definitely would not recommend it if it is something really complex.

I maintain them by myself.

I go to the shop for regular maintenance

Since the question has been selected as a Great question, I need to clarify that I do not hate third party or authorized technicians. In fact I learn from some of their YouTube channels.

But why pay someone without even trying yourself, right? And that too in this time when you can search the parts online and order them conveniently.

You are a moron. As you've failed the first step of a professional repair.

Step one is to NEVER place bare electronic parts on bare surfaces and always use an earthed or rubber mat to prevent static damage.

Youtube videos are only guidance and never reliable on their own. You could fuck up your device, and insurance isn't going to hear "but some guy on youtube..." Also, you've no guarantee of the reliability or qualification of any youtuber.

In fact, I have given you the number one tip to find out if any Youtube repair is a professional or cowboy. A professional will always use a static wristband, and an earthed/rubberised mat

But, there is my gaming mouse pad on the right side of my laptop which I have not shown in the photo. And the laptop is 4 years old, hence out of warranty.

The photo is after everything was done. The first step I followed was to disconnect the battery and then move on to other things. As a small capacitor can also do big amounts of damage.

I had also considered the static charge, and it was because of that, I had taken extra care around the laptop. Extra care includes other things apart from the mouse pad.

These old machines were really easy to maintain and repair, right? I wish the modern machines were that good enough.

Now its mostly like use and replace, if faulty.

I replaced the speaker switches that were badly corroded, cleaned it up some and gently fired it up. It works great Also glued onto the inside of the cover was the schematics. Very cool

I do the job of cleaning and installing any new hardware for my laptop.

But if, somehow, some microsoldered part just detached from the motherboard, I will really need to go directly to the divison office of the brand. As microsoldering skill is quite a difficult one to even understand. Let alone confidently practice on a device.

I can repair my own video game controllers and once I took two NES consoles and used their parts to make one console that actually worked. That is pretty much the extent for me other than just cleaning stuff.

I can repair walls in a house though or a deck, and things like that.

So far, mostly, yes, I do it myself. I've replaced the lid, screen, keyboard and DVD drive by myself on my laptop. Sometimes, for tougher jobs, I DO need to take it to tech support but, as that place no longer exists, I'm stuck!

It is a good idea to do some maintenance regularly. I fried a very good GPU because I didn't blow the dust out of the case. It was covered by about 1/4 inch of dust. I had thought about it many times but kept putting it off in spite of overheating warnings on my box.

It's not usually that much more complex than Lego, until something goes wrong. This laptop's over 10 years old. The desktop upstairs is from the 1990's. Things are usually pretty robust.
