If you could change one thing and only one thing about social media what would it be?

We actually have this feature in Japan on a social media called Mixi: allow your friends to describe you on your profile. It's not something you can hide as well. Whatever your friends write about you stays on your profile until you remove them.
I think it's a great feature because it causes most Japanese people using it to only add friends they know in real life, not random strangers on the internet.
That's definitely an interesting concept for sure.
It should also be done on online dating sites in my opinion. Then people can write, "This guy cheated on me." "This woman ghosted me after ordering top-shelf wine." And I think that would make people very selective about who they date.
Basically we get to review our dates/friends on social media, and I would make this change for all of them. It would be a mandatory feature.
Yeah, kind of like yelp. I agree. That would absolutely help out the dumpster fire of online dating for sure.
What's to stop someone from making false accusations or misconstruing a situation though?
Same as Yelp. You will just have to weigh the reviews. So if a person on tinder has a 95 percent positive review overall but one review is over the top negative and it's only one review then odds are someone has an axe to grind more than likely.
@MrNameless For me it's similar to old school dating where we date people we already know in our community and it's my main goal is to make online dating more similar. In old school dating, the same risk appeals if we select our partners poorly. They might gossip and slander our reputation within the community. At the same time, they are jeopardizing their own reputation if the rumors turn out to be false. So they also have reasons to be more risk-averse as with everyone in terms of who they select to date and befriend.
* [*] same risk [applies], sorry.
Also with old school dating, there's far less risk of people being exploited for their money or bodies or anything like that because we tend to focus on getting to know people well, and through mutual people in the community, before we go on a single date with them. We don't dive into dating people we barely know with whom we just had a little online exchange and looked at some pics and read a profile.
Another thing to keep in mind is that this is two-way. This isn't like customer vs. service provider where only the customer reviews the service. It's two people who review each other. Both people are putting their reputations on the line dating each other, as with the traditional approach to dating.
Traditional approach: date people we already know within our community.
New school approach: date people we barely know outside of our community.
I want to make online dating closer to the traditional approach, however possible.
@mandyfire98 I think that's an excellent point as well. The way I'm also envisioning it is that we can pull up a review history on a user and see what sort of reviews they give to people. That can also help spot people who have axes to grind and/or might be mistaking their own social problems on their dates. It also encourages some healthy degree of risk-aversion in leaving scathing reviews while simultaneously encouraging risk-aversion to behaving in a way on a date such as to tempt people to leave them.
But most of all, I just want to make this closer to the traditional thing. I never tried online dating but I spent most of my early 20s doing a new school way which is to pick up female strangers in bars and nightclubs, diving into dates that way. And the resulting relationships weren't exactly ideal.
It wasn't until I switched to the old school way close to my mid-20s that I started finding some really amazing women in my community who were very compatible with me and with whom I could get along so well, the ultimately being my wife now of 14 years.
Yeah that would definitely help with people leaving bad reviews just out Of spite.
I'd get rid of the anti-social sorts.
Censorship.
I got flagged by instagram because I said some choice words to what clearly appeared to be an islamic extremist that commented on the last post of one of the 11 marines that died during the Afghanistan withdrawal.
As a former marine it pissed me off, don’t you fucken dare degrade my brothers and sisters like that.
Stop kids using them until they are of an age when they can understand the shit that is there.
In the UK Daily Mail newspaper today, there was a kid dead because of a TicToc craze.
Who can interact with kids.
I wish there was a way to limit kids from even being on social media honestly.

New policies where they hold your account hostage until you adhere to their new policy of putting your phone number in -- for your own safety of course. 🙄 Ha! what a joke! It''s so invasive that they would need that on record. They didn't need it for over 10 years, then suddenly they do? I mean, it's the principle of it all.
Hi. I use facebook and instagram mostly. I'm usually fine with it but if there's something I would change that would be getting rid of stupid errors like when I try to message someone she has to follow me first or can't send more than one message. If I can see someone outside in real life and talk to them without permission I should be able to do the same in social media.
Stop far right propaganda from infiltrating them and turning our boomer parents into conspiracy loons lol
You're not wrong at all lol. Misinformation is crazy on social media
This is mainly a Facebook problem and a bit of a twitter/x problem too. But yeah a few of my older uncles are spouting off a bunch of conspiracy nonsense that are being pushed by the far right. Qanon stuff, anti-Semitic drivel etc.
Yeah I see so much of it online it's amazing people fall for it.
Keep it social and take the business and political side out of it.
Definitely would help a lot
All social media platforms must adopt the US first amendment protection of free speech or lose all federal funded ad revenue.
You should have to scan your photo ID to open an account. This gives the site administrator proof of who you are and that you are an actual human being.
Curated content. Where the algorithm shows you more of what you like. It builds a biased mindset and curbs the opportunities to explore.
Of course it benefits businesses, but it harms consumers.
I would ban anonymity as it encourages a lot of keyboard warriors to be disrespectful.
You're not wrong.
All pedos and by extension kids under 18 can't take, post or share nudes
Make it for people 21+ years old, like alcohol in the United States.
The one thing I would change is for people to not use it. You said I can't say delete it. So let it be a thing but people choose to not use it.
Social media is a frigging cesspool
Remove the ads so I can actually see my friends post. My feed is basically 20+ ads to each actual post. And thanks to the algorithm I just see the same couple friends over and over.
let me see them without an account of my own... I do want all those memes
People who I agree with become mods and put in the work.
But I should aim higher because the mods are chained by the higher ups, we need the higher ups to change their view.
I would that people would be kind to people who simply disagree. There is so much silly drama over things.
Maybe add a special kids version only for kids.
And figure out some way to keep political content seperated
make it less repetitive. so like if there's one post a million other people can't just post the exact same thing every other week.
I will search for everything on WhatsApp.
Like you can search any person there, join any group etc
You have to prove you have at least a 100 IQ before you can access it.
Limit the minimum age kids access social media, I say 15 and below no access.
I wouldn't change anything, because I don't use it! Never have, never going to!
Ban pictures/videos of woman lol. I'm sick of seeing hoes everywhere on everything.
Remove anonymity. There are too many people on social media who feel comfortable spreading hate knowing there will be no repercussions because they are posting anonymously.
More pictures of dino chickie nuggies
You definitely on that nuggies flow lately 🤣🦕
Oh I gotcha. Coded messages
How people treat each other, everyone's so brave behind a screen
I hate them all except YouTube.
Add a filter that blocks co-workers...
deal with groomers
Facebook should have stayed as college-only
There would be a truth filter
Forbid it to children
Add more time control.
Honest!!!
