I have an iPhone14, which has an eSim card already built in. Will I need to get anything for the phone to travel abroad? PS--My phone is "unlocked"?

I've been looking on YouTube and can't find an answer to the question. I see many on how good phones with eSim cards are, and what you can do with them, but nothing on what requirements you need for WIFI and use things on my phone, like Google Maps, in particular. For those who have traveled with Iphones-- will I need to buy a service so that my phone will work, especially with those apps? Thanks so much.

PS--my phone is "unlocked", and I have Metro PCS, which they do not have in Japan. However it is still an iPhone with an eSim card.

For those of you traveling abroad, this may be helpful if you're going to Japan : "BEST eSIMs for Japan Travel 2024: Mobal, Ubigi, Airalo Review" and have "Metro PCS"
If your phone is unlocked then you can and need to purchase a plan for Japan since Metro PCS is not available. The three choices mentioned in the video are all good. It just depends on your needs for data. Also, if you need a Japanese phone number while in Japan, you might be interested in this video:
