No, I've never used floppy disks. although I do know what they are because my dad's a software engineer and he has shit loads of them in his office, like boxes FULL of them piled-up in the closet! He also has every hard drive out of every computer and laptop. He's ever owned! He SWEARS that; 1) he is going to conglomerate them onto one data server (at some point), and 2) that "my whole life on these things, I have unfinished projects that could be worth millions if I ever get round to finishing them!" Which of course, he will never do! Also, what possible value could a software program that my dad began writing in 2005 or 2015 have today? 🙄.

Laura, Many of the programs from 20-30 years ago worked... without errors. That cannot be said of some programs today.

I still have a PC in my garage with 5.25 and 3.5 inch floppy drives plus a Zip drive. I have been able to recover data for people that way. But I don't miss those days much.

It would take 4-5 floppy discs to hold a single MP3 song (at 320k bps), and would take forever to load. Meanwhile I have half a terabyte micro SD cards the size of a fingernail that are quite fast. I carry 35,000 songs in my pocket, all with embedded tags and album art.

I never used an IBM "Winchester" 30/30 but I know what they are.

It's a floppy disc for a computer. You inserted the into a slot in the computer.
It served the same purpose as later CDs or thumb drives for uploading, downloading and storing information.

I used them before at my job, but don't remember much else. I have no idea what the little square hole was for.

Itis a 1.4 MB floppy disk. That square hole is a switch that prevents the disk from being over written.

I think I wrote stuff onto that label, and much later peeled off the label and replaced it.

And yes: the function of the square hole is to sometimes make it disappear..

I even remember the older brother, the 5.25“ floppy disc (which was the last one, after the 8“ actually being floppy) on the Commodore 64. 🥰🤩🥳
The hole was to enable the write protection.

Better question is who still remembers using these? Just joking, I remember using 1.44mb floppy disks well into the late 00's. Luckily we have flash drives now so 1.44mb floppy disk are no longer needed for the majority of users.

Oh yeah I remember using those when computers were very new. Those floppy discs didn't hold much memory compared to today's memory sticks. They held 1.4 MB.

Actually know what that is it's a floppy disk there's some in the computer lab at school we still use old computers that barely run so that way we can't play games instead of work

And yes lol.. I do remember them.. My first experience with a computer caused me to wipe everything in about 20 minutes flat..
A genius using a floppy disc managed to get the whole operating system back in a few minutes and I was in awe.. it was like 'magic'

Floppy disks were used a lot before cd's and DVD came on the scene and then flash drives took overflow them, now we use a cloud.
