I AT LEAST need it to show up in WMP when I put the CD in!! I have to TELL IT to play that CD but that won't open the rip controls!
It's not a store bought CD it's one I just burned a few hours ago.

WMP doesn't allow ripping.
You will need to use something like cdburnerxp to rip and then burn.
It sure does! I've ripped hundreds on it over the past 25 years. The problem is, getting it to recognize the external drive when I put a CD into it. I had no problems with that on the laptop downstairs but the screen died on me a few months ago. This computer ONLY wants to rip from the E: drive but that's been broken for at least a decade or so. I have no idea why it won't recognize the external unless I tell it to play from there but, even that won't open the rip functions.
It's been a while since I did it and I don't really use them anymore. But I'm wondering what program you're using to rip it.
Windows Media Player.
I think the problem is that the player refuses to recognize that the disc or even that drive exists! I never had this problem on any of my other computers but they are all in need of minor repairs.
I can yell it to play the CD in that drive but I can't make it rip. The functions for that don't appear across the player window.
That's definitely not the best software to use. Even 20 years ago, they didn't really like people using Windows Media Player to rip something. My suggestion would be to look on Reddit and find the best software and then use that instead.
@Grond21 i remember the CD burner craze! it had a soft run and then it worked and so they charged for these songs to burn to disc.
Well, it usually works and I've never had a problem with it `til now.

That might be a hardware issue
I guess but how do I combat it?
My suggestion would be to describe the issue to Grok and follow its instructions.
you can reformat and rename your drives
Try iTunes
They'll let me rip from a CD?
Absolutely! You can save the music on your computer as well as buy music too!
