Have You Ever Thought Of The Safest Places To Live Or Visit On The Earth?

I was born in Manhatten, NY and raised in Miami, Florida. I enlisted in the US Navy which allowed me to travel to a lot of places in the world (some I never wanted to see). Some of the countries I have not traveled to yet are in South America, Africa, Europe, Iceland, Greenland, China, Russia, India.

I ran across this video while surfing YouTube and the title caught my eye because I never thought about living or traveling to a country based on safety concerns alone. Do you think about safety where you currently live? Are their places locally you would not go to?

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and I've never felt uncomfortable but I try to be aware. There are Oakland riots, SF protests and random crime everywhere. When I read or see the news (which I limit) there's always horrific stories of tragedy and violence which may occur near me. Safety is a concern but something I've never thought of previously when I travel.

What are your thoughts? Do you not go to places because you think you aren't safe? Do you travel anywhere your heart desires regardless of the threat of harm? Would you not visit a country because it is deemed unsafe overall or because something senseless happened (Manchester comes to mind)? I would still want to go to Manchester. I don't want random, senseless, tragic violence to be a deciding force in anything I decide to do or not do, let alone travel. Travel is exciting and a catalyst for personal growth in my opinion.

Yeah, I factor it in, depends what kind of danger I read about the place. Id never been to India before I backpacked accross it and Nepal for 3 months. And on the first day, I thought to myself 'If I get on the wrong side of the people here, Im fucked!' It was an interesting feeling of helplessness and throwing onseself to the mercy of a society I didn't know. For the most part it went ok though.

I've lived in Denmark a long time, and my god its safe. Im originally Greek (Hellenic), and there, it depends.

Manchester is for me the most important powerhouse of western culture in past decades, so not much would stop me going there again. I might still pick my areas wisely (Mosside wouldn't be my first stop, etc), but I went through a long phase of wanting to visit the projects in places I wasn't from.

I made a short pilgrammage to the rougher part of Harlem to see where Tupac hung out (Im caucasian and went with my dark-skinned girlfriend from the city). The people were fine and it was a nice visit, but as it got darker I sensed some agression and we left just in time.

I've travelled all my life, been held hostage at gunpoint, been in street fights, slept rough, harrassed by the police, mobbed in Varanasi, even shot at, but safety isn't the first thing I think about. Its not the last thing I think about either, but it comes from a sense of practicality more than from any fear.

I'll probably skip Colombia though. Places where diseases consistently originate too. If it doesn't add up, I'll go somewhere else. there's a lot of world out there!

I've been to plenty of dangerous countries and cities, including Manila - Philippines (which I will not go to again, didn't feel safe at all 😅)

If I'm going to visit a fairly dangerous place I will be sure to look up tips on how to stay safe and places to avoid. It's always good to do your research wherever you travel.

I did so before I went to Marrakech and it went completely fine for me, but some friends of mine who didn't do their research were tricked and caught in a nasty situation where they were robbed off all their money. Which could've been avoided had they done their research.

I do the same in the country/city I live in, there are locations in London I will avoid because it's unsafe, and places that warns me to keep my phone out of sight (so I'd do tha etct).

I'd love to take my gal to Egypt, for example, but right now doesn't feel like the right time.

I do a lot of research on anywhere that feels like it *might* have security concerns.

Obviously, in the western world, there's a risk in lots of places of a random terrorist attack, and you CANNOT plan for that. Having said that, I've been steering clear of certain places in western Europe for a couple of years now, because I don't believe that their counter-terrorism intelligence is up to the job.

But in general, I agree with your principles on this. Be aware - it's excellent advice.

You are far more likely to get stabbed or shot in Manchester than blown up by terrorists. That said, you are pretty unlikely to suffer any problems at all. I've never had a problem in Manchester. Manchester was, for a period, referred to as Gunchester because of gang shootings. Considering that we don't have legal firearms, except shotguns licensed to farmers and for sport shooting/hunting, that unfortunate name was an indication of how much of a problem it had become at the time.

I was in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1998 when the economy crashed and the widespread rioting happened. I walked past the heavily armed soldiers on the streets as I went about my business. Life goes on for those of us lucky enough not to have to live in war zones. At least we can leave.

In contrast, I have been to many places that were safer to walk around late at night than your average UK city.

I live not far from Manchester and it's actually probably pretty safe. Well, least the centre is. Obviously there's a lot of poverty in the outskirts.

I actually live near the countryside in the North West of England, and I'd consider those kinds of areas to be very safe, touch wood. It's a very placid area, in all regards.

Definitely Singapore. It has the lowest crime rate due to the strict laws. They fine people for a lot of things and are not hesitant to throw lawbreakers into jail. You could even get fined (S$500 or $366 US dollars) for not flushing the toilet in a public area.

Nowhere is ever safe on this planet, either more danger or less danger. If you believe a place is too dangerous to visit then don't go there, or if you believe where you live is very dangerous, then consider moving to somewhere else that is safer and not as dangerous. Danger can include geographic locations that consistently are affected by disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.

I live in Australia which I don't think would be far off number 1 for safety desplite many concerns about our wildlife. I think because we're so isolated from everyone else is the key. I'm forced to downgrade in safety when I travel. Being too protected can leave you unable to relate with a large segment of the world.

Don't think about much myself. Most of the really unsafe places like Somalia and El Salvador, I really have no desire to visit anyway. On the other hand, I wouldn't recommend walking around lost at 2 AM in most large cities, like I did in Tokyo with no concerns.

I love to Travel, Even have Lived Abroad out in Egypt. I still have a Husband out there who I Have not been Back to see, Since ISIS came along.

Probably finland, sweden and norway
Then greenland and iceland

Those seem to generally be far away from any type of conflict or even nuclear wars they seem to be the safest

Living in Finland is pretty safe. :) So yes I've thought about these things, and I'm proud to live in a country as safe as Finland.

There are human created dangers like: shooting, kidnapping, stabbings, thievery, arsonists, gangs, rape etc.

There are nature created dangers like: tornadoes, wildfires, hailstorms, hurricanes, tsunami's, sandstorms, monsoon's etc.

Such a silly thing to say. Your attitude is not very good. You clearly need to educate yourself regarding Muslim religion, culture etc.
I'm not Muslim, but have worked and lived in Muslim countries and although Terrorists of today are born Muslim, they are Extremists, and good Muslim people do not consider these people to be Muslim and go to great lengths to distance themselves from these evil people.
If you really want to talk about Terrorist's then maybe you should consider the fact that the President of the good old USA ordered thousands of good U. S. men and women to go to Iraq under the guise of stopping Saddam Hussein, when in fact they went there to take all of the oil from the Iraqi oilfeilds. Good Iraqi people defended their country and were killed in the process. Thousands of good, decent U. S military were also killed too and for what? Oil
