I do. I mean, if I had my druthers, I’d probably take the slow, scenic way to places and experience all the “in between” places…but who has the time and money?😝
But I hear all these horror stories about flying and how much people hate it, but it’s always been fine for me. The pressure in my ears is the worst part, but I just chew gum. I always get a window seat so I can look out the window or lean against the wall and sleep. I’ve really only flown a handful of times though. I didn’t take my first flight until I was 28. But in the next ten years I’d end up flying to Los Angeles three times, Texas twice, Florida twice for semipro football national championship games (won both 🏆😎🏆), and Detroit, Michigan once. But now I haven’t flown in almost six years. Just haven’t needed to go anywhere far away🤷♂️
Anyway….. I’ve enjoyed it. I still prefer car or train travel, but flying’s not bad, and it gets you a long way quickly. I don’t like getting stuck sitting next to someone heavyset if they’re making the buffer space tight, or general armrest hogs. Poor hygiene is no good either, haha. But I can usually just sleep, so it’s just like taking an uncomfortable nap but you wake up on another side of the country, or a different country altogether, although that hasn’t been my experience yet.
And I want to strangle all the people who race to stand up to grab their luggage and get off as soon as they can take their seatbelts off, out of order in terms of de-boarding from front to back, and causing a human traffic jam that just overall makes the process slower. I wonder how these people fly multiple times and it doesn’t register that they do that every time but never get off any quicker, lmao. As soon as that happens, I just go on my phone or read, I know there’s 15-20 minutes before I can actually leave. It is what it is, so I stay comfortable in my seat, get off just about the same time, and stood uncomfortably shoulder-to-shoulder with other people for less time. Recognize the pattern and adapt, haha, I figured that out after my first round trip was done.
My favorite part of flying is the layover time. Like a good 2 1/2 hour layover is a perfect amount of time to walk around and people watch in the concourse, find a restaurant with a bar, get breakfast/lunch/dinner as the time dictates, but at the same time, other than the flight departures and arrivals, “airport time” isn’t like “real life time”….. you can have two tall beers at 10:30 in the morning with your pancakes, lmao.
And I have a pretty strong and nationally-notable accent, so it’s never long before someone starts asking if I’m from where they think I am when I interact out loud with the bartender, and they want me to say things in my accent, lmao. And then we talk about where we’re from, and I make a momentary friend who I’ll never see again after 20 minutes from that moment😂 But that’s fun, I enjoy seeing the country and talking to people from all over.

@slatyb Yeah, that’s true. I’m usually going between Boston and NYC when I take the train, so I don’t really think of all the gaps elsewhere. It’s decent in the northeast U. S., but could still be much better. But if I have to go to NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, maybe even as far as Chicago, and points in between, that’s possible. But the scheduling isn’t always great, and sometimes I’ll have to drive to a different city to get a time that works, often driving halfway there in the case of NYC.
But I love a train ride. It’s like driving without the traffic. I also love graffiti aesthetically, and there’s cool stuff all along the route on almost every wall and underneath every bridge. I enjoy that, haha. It’d be really cool to take an extended train trip and rent a sleeper cabin. I don’t know if that’s a thing anymore, I’ve just even them in old movies, haha
But yeah, America could and should do better with rail systems, but we choose not to🤦♂️

I used to struggle a lot with motion sickness
(Technically I still do)
But now that I know how to control it I do enjoy planes more than before
Still it would be nice to have my own private jet instead 😎11 Reply- 25 d
Lol!! That would be pretty cool!!😎

We're now waiting until the children are just a little older, when we might just do a short flight to somewhere like France etc. to see how they like it or not.
How about your goodself @thegreenyogi xxx

I've traveled my whole life from the time I was born. My father was career Air Force. I was career Army. I did 7 moves with Fortune 100 corporations. I lived as an expat in the Caribbean for 4 years. In private equity I was visiting our portfolio of roughly 24 companies we owned at any given moment.
I'm so done with travel. I hate US airports with their current level of security. I fly private whenever I can. I really dread commercial flights like the plague. I'm a curmudgeon when it comes to air travel. Any travel actually.
I get why other people view travel as an exciting novelty and think I'm weird. But they haven't lived my life. I absolutely do not need to know what it's like in Rwanda in July. I already know.
10 Reply 386 opinions shared on Travel topic. At one time, it was fun and exciting. But it became a complete drag when they brought in TSA after 911. And I haven't been on an airline since before 2000 because I refused to comply with the jab mandates and didn't want to risk being kidnapped and quarantined. I didn't want to show "zem my papers" or get a PCR test just to travel.
Also, over the years, coach became more cramped, food got shitty, and attendants overworked.
Flying in coach is about as fun as riding on a bus these days.
I have only ever flown coach because of the price. Except, one time a friend and I who are both tall, were flying to St. Louis on a red eye flight. The plane was pretty empty and a nice stewardess invited us to sit in business class. But that was in the early 80s when airlines were friendly.10 ReplyI like travelling by plane, but early flights tend to stress me out. Connection to and from the airport by public transport -- by far the easiest for me -- isn't always readily availaible. It's great during the day, but there are only a few trains early or very late at night.
I like to have plenty of time to check in, pass security, find the gate and stroll around. I've been flying since I was a kid, seen dozens of airports and travelled alone on long destinations with 3 or 4 stop-overs.
10 ReplyI hate anything that involves early booking, preparation, and multiple potential degrees of failure. Especially if it involves going somewhere unfamiliar and being surrounded by strangers.
So no... I hate planes, I hate airports. To a slightly lesser extent I hate train-stations and trains too, but since I don't generally need my passport nor to go through security for those, they tend to be less problematic.
I'm most comfortable staying at home on my own... or just walking to where I want to go.10 ReplyThe flying itself doesn't bother me at all. It's the overall beating that is the US airport experience... I'd rather fight a hippo than deal with TSA.
However, I do remember two different flight that I swore were going down. Both were a result of inclement weather... worst turbulence ever.10 ReplyI do in general. Sometimes the airport can be a hassle, and it would also piss me off if a plane crashed. I know the odds are low but that would make it even more annoying if I died like this. But so far I've only had good experiences on the plane. Everything around it I've had bad experiences. Delays, annoying overcrowded security check etc.
10 ReplyNO I do not. I just had the most unstable landing I've had in over 40 years of flying commercial airlines flights the other day. It was really quite disturbing the rotation before we came in to land.
Why I don't like it is because the whole reliance on someone else and millions of bits of material being required to work ok at the same time. Breathing the same air as 400 other people for hours on end, the noise of engine and other people just being around them is not my thing

There's no winning on planes. If you get a window seat, getting out to take a piss becomes a task. You don't want to feel like an asshole to wake the person beside you to go to the washroom.
If you don't have a window seat, then no view and you always have to get up for the others.
Either way, you're most likely on a pretty uncomfortable ride for hours.
And if you decide to not want to have to go through all of that first-class costs an arm and a leg.12 Reply- 25 d
Lucky ass 😂

It's ''complicated'' - I like flying.
Just not 'travelling' in one of those sardine cans. Where: 'take-off' always is a special moment to me to enjoy.
Why: it opens a third dimension of moving. It's thrilling to do some aerobatics - even on the passenger seat 'only'.

I really enjoy flying. Check out Captain Steeeve's YouTube's for all sorts of aviation posts, if you are also into that. What I do NOT enjoy is all the crap before the flight. I'll be making a 1.5 hour flight next month, and the airport wants passengers at the airport 2 hours before flight time. Seriously?

I have to a lot for work and no I don't. Local airports here are under construction for my entire life it seems. The traffic is horrible and doing it frequently is very annoying. Also airport food since Covid is worse quality and double the price.

I do, but I haven't flown in several years. I like seeing/hearing the wings/engine (e. g. during take off, landing), seeing the ground and sky, eating the food (from my experience, food from uk airlines >>> food from usa airlines). Its cool that we are surfing the air.

if it was without the start and landing I would fully enjoy it...
but the start and landing make me panicking a bit :D

When everything is going smooth, sure. But it’s 50:50 with security goons pissing me off, long queues at the check-in, bag missing or damaged at the arrival… 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
10 Reply 708 opinions shared on Travel topic. I used to but it's such a hassle now. I used to be able to arrive at the airport half an hour before departure, then just walk to the gate and board.

Fortunately, my wife and I have no reason to ever have to fly. There's too many negatives. Needing enhanced ID, baggage and body searches, Non of these personal violations and hassles were being done the last time I flew, back in the 80's
10 Reply 572 opinions shared on Travel topic. I really do not. The planes are cramped and uncomfortable or if you want to be comfortable, cost an unreasonable amount.
