Carmel is boring AF. It's now a shopping mall that closes about 9. Big Sur is very scenic but it's not forested, and lodging is limited and expensive. If you want to see Big Sur, go to Monterey and take a day trip through Big Sur. Maybe take the 17 mile drive. I wouldn't go in the summer -- it can be too crowded to enjoy. I was in Monterey in January and drove down through Big Sur. It was very quiet, the road was open.
