Should we really have a plus-size Disney princess now?

Like a lot of kids, I grew up with those beautiful Disney princesses, from Snow White and Cinderella to Ariel and Belle.

I also grew up with Barbie and yet, I'm not some image-obsessed female who wants to kill herself because she isn't a size 0. :P

I think it's dumb to have a plus-size Disney princess just because that's the trend now. I don't fat-shame or anything but... really? Loey Lane seems to think it's a good idea.

No, most definitely not.
I hear very often people make statements like "Barbie/disney princesses give us unrealistic standards to go by, given their thinness, hip shape, and proportions." That very well may be true to an extent... But having a 'plus size' (or unhealthily heavy) princess is a just-as-bad idea because it promotes the exact opposite side of the spectrum. It is a sort of fat acceptance.

Even if most of the US was plus size, we shouldn't have a princess or whatever be plus size. People shouldn't aspire to be a meh average, people should aspire to be better than an average. The symbols we use (to motivate people), not limited to disney princesses, should therefore be healthy ideals. Realistic, yes, but still ideals. A symbol for the ideal should be something we can give ourselves a goal with, not necessarily something to appease our self interest and confirm that we can continue not putting effort in.

I understand overweight people wanting a symbol to relate to... But having good self esteem is not going to matter to your body much/heart. Being fat is not an ok item for society to simply accept. Now, we shouldn't shame people for being fat, but we shouldn't certainly give any reason whatsoever to be fat. We should encourage as a society healthiness because, as members of the society, we want it to prosper. We should help their self esteem in other ways as best as we can.

Fat acceptance is like if one was to promote alcoholism. Many people drink just fine, but some drink too much. But that doesn't mean we should say "hey, it's alright if you drink too much" to spare the feelings of an alcoholic who feels bad for their actions. Then more people would care less about becoming alcoholics. We should rather encourage people and say "hey, you can quit. We as a society can help you out as well."

I understand your view, and I agree somewhat. But, having one, two maybe three plus size princesses isn't going to promote being fat. I don't think it's fat acceptance when the rest of the princesses (10? 20? more?) are all super skinny. I think the best thing would be to have princesses in different sizes, cause that's what reality looks like. That would send out a message that people are different but equally princess-like.

@Swedgirl Hmm, I would argue that Disney should have perhaps more realistic princesses in the sense of hip shape/proportions (granted it is a cartoon, so how realistic can it get-- their eyes are huge?). I also dig the diversity in terms of races since there is no one ideal race.
However, I would argue that Disney princesses are not meant to be the reality/statistics of weight. Rather, they are more so symbols of a dream or an ideal. They are objects to strive for.

As for the first point, I would argue (without trying to get myself into a slippery slope fallacy) that one/two/three opens the door for more. From that, even just one can lead as a symbol for fat promotion.
So from that, I can get behind making a disney princess skinny but slightly more realistic in terms of hip proportions. But I can't get behind trying to show reality via plus-size. I think it would send out a bad message.

Yes, these princesses are suppose to be a vision/dream/ideal. They can also help adjust the sick super skinny ideal that society has been building up. It's "our" (Disney's) chance to create those ideals from scratch!

I wouldt approve the plus size as in super overweight/obese. When I said "making a princess skinny," I meant like a depiction of a healthily skinny person-- not underweight (that'd lead to the same issues I have with plus size princesses but reversed). As for plus size, I was thinking more so it being a more PC way of saying unhealthily overweight... With unhealthily overweight including (but not limited to) mordibidly obese.

First why is Mr. AleDEEurope saying that she is Fat. Give me a break on that comment. Not everybody is going to be the super model and that is a fact of life. Here is something. At the end of the day we have to be able to look at ourselves in the mirror and be happy with that person. With the good and bad. LET THE KIDS LEARN TO BE KIDS. If showing the kids that PRINCESS CAN come in all different sizes works then what is it going to hurt. I'm not worried about it in the long run.

It doesn't matter what it is as long as a princess is healthy, confident, and can overcome some kind is struggle. Kids pick up on things and even if a princess isn't exactly like them- they can definitely relate to a princess that is overcoming an obstacle like self love or acceptance. Just give kids the tools they need to be great. I wouldn't say having a plus sized princess is necessary. I'de love to see a princess with a big booty and small boobs like me cause it would just be cool but the princess shouldn't be overweight or obese- but curvy would be really cool to see. Got some booty but a smaller chest
Darker skin maybe olive or dark olive
Big hair- black/brown and textured
Hazel/green eyes
Strong ass eyebrows
she had a very original style, always trying new things and could pull off anything she had her mind set on
Half Caribbean half European
Raised in a poor household- found creative alternatives to things she missed out on
Often grew up used to being the outsider or alone.
She is the most understanding girl and has a really great ability to wrap her mind around unique concepts despite never doing amazing in school, her mind didn't learn the same way others did.
She can definitely be one to hold a grudge and hold things against you that you had done previously.
Doesn't share herself with people and has a hard time communicating which is partially why she excels in drawing, painting, and just creating.
Makes her dreams and concepts in her mind a reality
Her motto is "why critisize something you don't understand"

Here are my points if y'all are really going to go crazy over it:
1. If people say "skinny models don't promote anorexia", what sense does it make to claim that plus size would promote obesity?
2. Plus size=\=obese. It can be obese, but not always.
3. It's about time for diversity. I know most people don't give a shit about it, why would y'all?, but it IS important to see your demographic to be represented in a manner that isn't always as the "villain" or for comedic relief, or even (for us Latinos) other than the help, etc.
We've been existing for years and it honestly bothers me more that people are upset at the fact that we *have* to demand for representation of us (I'm not plus size, but I'm referring to demographics that are historically or represented as cliche), then the fact that we aren't represented or that we are often given the crappy or less important roles and told to be "grateful we're even included".

Honestly, I'm a touch indifferent, but if I could offer a thought:

No one had an issue with the unrealistically thin Disney Princesses, for good reasons. They were cartoons, and it was a particular style. Of course, some people still have an issue with it, but when it comes down to it, one could effortlessly argue: your kids don't have to watch anything that you don't allow them to. And of course, parents or prospective parents hold the primary responsibility of teaching their children what a healthy body is all about, it isn't Disney's job.

So, what's the big deal if there IS a plus sized Disney Princess? The very same argument could be used in this instance. It's just a cartoon, and it's up to other sources to teach kids what is or isn't healthy. This whole "hide the fat people" concept in the media to me is silly, because unhealthy standards have been around forever and have been portrayed for ages without half as much issue as the plus sized community seems to get.

All in all, if you don't like it, don't support it, but I don't see what the big deal is.

I've noticed something, Snow White is the only chubby looking Disney Princess, if you compare her to Princess Jasmine, Aurora, etc you'll see what I'm talking about.

I think she is chubby looking because she was made in 1937, and the women in that era weren't exactly very slim women, so I think Disney was trying to make her what the societies idea of what a perfect body shape of the 1930s was.

I beleive as time went on, Disney started portraying the image of what was an acceptable and highly praised body shape in their cartoons. I'm not saying being plus size isn't acceptable, what I'm saying is that being slim is more acceptable in today's society.

Nowadays, the ideal woman is slim and tall and that's what Disney has been giving us as Disney Princesses. I don't really care if they make a plus size Princess, it'll still be a good movie but I do think there's a need to.

According to the American fashion industry, plus size, is anything above a size 10. A size 10 woman is usually below average in weight. The average American woman is a size 14. Now before we say this is big, I'll give you a size comparison. Maralyn Monroe was a size 14. Now, the standard measurement for a size 14 had decreased over the years, so, today, she would probably wear something like a 16 or 18. Think about that for a minute. It's Maralyn Monroe, obese? Far from it actually. So, by plus size, one can assume something between a size 12 and a size 16 princess would be a healthy athletic body type to show young children. Heck, she should be a warrior type princess. A strong athletic build, something that you actually want a little girl to look at and say, "Wow, she's gorgeous! I want to look just like her!" So, she grows up thinking, I should be healthy, and strong, and know how to defend myself, not, I need to loose weight so I can be pretty like the Disney princesses. So, how about that? A princess that is plus size by number, but healthy by actually looking at her, that kicks butt and saves the day.

The body of the current princesses are unattainable body proportions and are often criticized by skinny shamers. How is it logical to pull a 180 on the opposite end of the spectrum and have a plus-sized princess, which represents an unhealthy lifestyle of overeating and lack of exercise?

I'm for a size 4 instead of a 0 athletic type Barbie or Role Model. This would mean a figure with larger upper calves and quads who looks HOT everywhere else and tight high glutes. So basically other than the calves everything our darker sexier sisters seem to have in abundance that I work hard to get. Not to be sexy but it's what I needed to run proficiently and then be my best with yoga and a strong core.

There's nothing more important than a strong core when it comes to health and fitness.

It's extremely unhealthy to be overweight and if you are as a child and taught to accept it, it's just that much easier for you to slip into obesity as an adult. Girls don't need to be taught to be a twig but it is hard to enjoy life overweight.

If walking a mile is hard then life is hard and you are deprived of a lot. No kid should be led down that path.

If you want to see the real problem do a search for old black and white photos from pre-WWII era. With very few exceptions everyone is slender. Look at old pics of large cities and you will see no fast food joints. No junk foods. People did not bomb their bodies with an unhealthy amount of carbs, calories and grease.

The new Disney Princess, Moana, is pretty curvy, and I love her to death! I think it would be nice to have a lot of different kinds of Disney Princesses, not just when it comes to body type.

I would be getting pissed off if they were trying to cast a large girl in the role of one of the former princesses, simply because it didn't fit the image I know and love. However, I don't see anything wrong with a plus sized princess. They made a black princess, and a Hawaiian princess to allow more diversity in Disney. I grew up pudgy, and I remember playing princess dress up with some friends. I always had to be the sultan from Aladdin or Ursula from The Little Mermaid, because "None of the princesses are fat!" It seems silly now, but it really upset me as a kid. It will be nice to see the diversity continue to grow in Disney movies. Let all kids feel special. Yes. Just because you didn't grow up to be self conscious doesn't mean others haven't. Both guys and girls grow up seeing the versions of their genders they are taught they should be, skinny being one of them, but only a small part of the problem. These movies teach kids what they feel like society wants them to look like and act and this something that affects them more than most understand. With that said, I do admit that it affects each child to varying degrees. To one child, it may only affect their mindset a bit, but it might affect another so much more.

I wouldn't just limit it to the princesses though. Changes do need to made in things to help girls, but boys are pressured into being a certain way as well that Disney moveis and others present to be the only acceptable way for them to be.

I still love disney princess because of the stories not their size. But if they wanted to make a plus size princess, as long as the story is good and they're making it because of a good story then so be it. If they're making it because of the PC world then that's not a good reason.

But not ever including a fat character at all when they've started making princesses of colour is also bad. Anything above a size 10 is considered plus size. Top give you a comparison, Maralyn Monroe, was a size 14. That's a plus size. Plus size, does not mean obese. Obese is me, a 22. There also needs to be a uniform definition of plus size. They brought in other races to say "look, all races are beautiful and great." It was to recognise them more as Disney usually did white girls which is fair enough. People can't help their race.
Having fat Disney princesses might make fat girls feel a "little" better, but it's sending out wrong messages, saying being unhealthily overweight is normal and fine. The more we accept fatness and tip toe around the problem not to offend people, the bigger the obesity problem will be. I can totally empathize with men/women who feel like outcasts due to their weight. However, we need to provide good, healthy examples for our children. We do not want them to be overweight, we want them to be healthy; especially in this day and age where everyone's looking at a screen of some sort. I think a good example of a Disney princess is Belle or that chick from Brave. A good example of a healthy Disney princess would be someone who isn't afraid to be who they are on the inside. I think less emphasis on outer beauty is super important - we should view Disney princesses as beautiful on the inside; exhibiting courage, strength, perseverance, and love. Outer beauty fades so children should not be taught to put so much weight into it. That being said, I would rather see an average/mousy looking girl as opposed to an overweight girl. As a child, I've always been fat, due to hormones and food allergies. I couldn't lose weight, doesn't matter how hard I tried. When I watched Disney movies, I was starting to feel even more insecure, as all the Disney princesses have a slim figure with a tiny waist. It caused me to think that you needed to have a good body to get to your "true love".

There are fat characters in Disney movies, but they are often seen as goofy, dumb people. For instance, Lefou, the chef in the Little Mermaid and the dad of Jasmine. It would be nice to finally see a main character, doesn't matter if it's a princess, who is overweight and saves the day.

Being too skinny is unhealthy but so isn't having too much weight on you. a lot of people nowadays think a girl who is lean is "too skinny" but a woman that has a lot of extra weight like the one pictured are considered "healthy". I think that Disney characters are just cartoons, they aren't too thin they just are general. I don't see the problem with them using plus sized princesses, but I don't think it's a big deal if they don't. When I was a kid, I never worried about how thin princesses were. I never worried about Barbie either. I honestly never gave it much thought until I was older and I read articles about it, but even then I don't care. I've never had body image problems from dolls or cartoons. It's usually when I compare myself to real life people. It's not even people on the media, it's people in my life.

When it comes to toys and movies, it's always adults who make a big deal out of it. Kid's really don't think much about that stuff. It's just like with dirty jokes. So many of that stuff went over my head as a kid, but I notice them now. People always make a big deal out of it, but kids aren't going to notice that.

If some writer has a really great idea and they conceive of their heroine as plus-sized from the beginning because it's just right for the story and it fits, then it's great. But not if the studio is doing it for reasons of political correctness, just for the sake of doing it. You could just as well ask why hasn't a Disney princess ever been elderly, disabled, lesbian, freakishly tall, from Zimbabwe, etc. Like it or not, there is an image or template that fairytale princesses and princes usually conform to. Ie. the princess is beautiful and virtuous, the prince dashing and brave. If most didn't tend to be a certain age, have certain moral values and a certain look, then the title of fairytale princess would have no meaning. There have always been full-figured characters in Disney films anyway, they just haven't been the heroic leads.

I don't really see a problem with it personally. Though if we teach our children anything it should be "be who you are" not "It's ok to be obese" the stupidly impossibly skinny Disney Princesses are just as bad but I don't think an obese one is the resolution. I think it'd be smarter to just stop pushing body image all together. Then we wouldn't have to have these debates at all. That's just me though.

Only if they do it in a way that uses her royal heaviness' smash for humor. Like if the princess had a cleaning scene like Snow White or Cinderella and she bounced the dishes off her gut and crap, or travelled by rolling. That would be hilarious, seems more like a secondary character than the main princess, though.

I personally don't think we should applaud people and instill in our kids that being overweight is a good thing. Even if it's some sort of genetic disorder where you gain weight quicker or have bigger bone density one should still take proper care of themselves to maintain a healthy weight and body. This isn't just me being a snob this is also be coming from an economic standpoint because when more people have heart disease and other problems caused with being overweight it requires insurance premiums for others to go up when that individual has to have surgery done in order to maintain they're unhealthy lifestyle

Why is everything so extreme these days. They either promote extremely thin to the point where it looks unhealthy or extremely over weight. Why not just have a girl who is in a healthy weight range, who doesn't have a 12 inch waist or one who doesn't weigh 500lbs.

Honestly i'm not really about promoting anything as far as appearances go. I think these stupid back and forth, skinny vs curvy battles are ridiculous. I think it's a good idea, as childhood obesity and being generally overweight in the US is on the rise, Disney would actually be targeting a growing demographic #promiseNoshade I think this a good idea. Most girls aren't a size 2 with a matchstick waist, so, why not show that?

HM... Why not? I don't understand why they can't make a plus size Disney princess. I think it will make kids have an understanding that everyone comes in different shapes and sizes, plus it's just a cartoon. I wonder if the same individuals who are enraged or unhappy with the idea or thought of a plus size princess do they have the same reaction when a cookie crisp commercial comes or a McDonalds commercial or a soda commercial or all these other commercials targeting people to eat their sugary salty fatty fried foods? Now that's really promoting obesity because they target children and people in general with these cartoon characters and celebrities these ads and commercials. I'm a little overweight and the woman I am seeing is a little overweight. We have started working out. It feels great. I feel better, stronger and more confident. Although I understand the importance of inclusion, being overweight is a choice. I also think the Disney princesses are way to unrealistic. I mean their eyes are gianormous. I mean come on! But. Yes here comes the but. Being overweight is deadly. It destroys the self image as well. It's harder for people to lose the weight and keep it off once your self image "sees" yourself as the chubby kid. I think a Disney Princess who has a realistic body (maybe a few extra pounds) is the right way to go. But not too heavy. Also, the Disney princess should be teaching good lessons. Like eating good food, getting exercise, feeling happy and confident. So bring it Disney, but don't go over board.

No. There shouldn't be a plus-sized princess. Reason being that princesses are very influential to young girls, most all girls want to be one, so why should there be one to encourage having a bigger waste line. That could be a mess. What we do need is more doctor princesses and princess lawyers and princess engineers with some mathematician princesses. STEM princesses please Disney.

I'm all for more diversity. I mean if they were obese? Then no. But I don't see any harm in a princess with a little more meet on their bones. The media already does a terrible job on influencing young girls that they're only pretty if they have a flat stomach and big boobs or butt.

Disney princess's already have unrealistic body proportions, so a Disney princess that is 'bigger' would make a nice change. There's a difference between having a bigger build, being plus size and being obese, not everyone is able to look like they weigh 100lbs even if they're constantly dieting, not everyone has the same structure.

Either way it's not something that I really care that much about.

No, because as many have said, it's not a good idea to promote being unhealthy.
But I would like to say that Disney princesses affect body image less than we think, a lot of the time it had a higher impact on things like gender roles and stereotypes etc. Well, at least that's what I learnt doing my research project lol
