I think the problem is having easy access to owning guns at the age of 18 years old. Maybe raise the age to 21 years to own a gun. Though it certainly wouldn't stop someone if their parent had guns.

Guns might be harder to get now than the 60s but it’s still not strict enough. Other countries changed their gun laws after they had mass shootings and it worked for them so why wouldn’t we at least TRY that
