Stockton Rush qoutes about safety.
- “At some point, safety just is pure waste"
- “I mean, if you just want to be safe, don’t get out of bed. Don’t get in your car. Don’t do anything.”
- “I think it was General MacArthur who said you’re remembered for the rules you break,” And I’ve broken some rules to make this. I think I’ve broken them with logic and good engineering behind me.”

I doubt it.
people like this are head strong. at least he was in the contraption he built, grant him that.
they took their risks and appears, it didn't work out.
that looks a miserable way to die.
I'd wonder if they included suicide pills tucked away inside. not a bad idea given the risks...
I don't think a fight broke out. I think what happened is that one arrogant difficult guy with some engineering knowledge and no common sense had things his way and killed himself and four other people as a result. This is a good example of Kruger dunning syndrome in action.
I was guessing when I wrote the above, and sadly, it turns out that I was right. He even fired a guy because the guy was raising "testing and safety questions" regarding the pre-deployment examination of the pressure vessel, parts of which were found on the seafloor this morning after it apparently imploded, killing everyone inside.
So much for knowing everything.
This guy and others are now dead as a result of his obstinate stupidity.
The main viewing port (window) was only certified to 1,600 meters and they intended a dive to 4,000 meters...
He deserves the Darwin Award, posthumously.
@Daniela1982 He certainly does!
Forgive me if it sounds dumb, but essentially the vessel couldn’t withstand that pressure of going to that depth and that’s why what happened, happened?
That is probably correct. Additionally, in a more granular fashion, the viewing port was only rated to 1600 ft. In the dive. Dive was going to go down to about 5 or 6,000 ft. They knew this ahead of time and yet ignored it. Additionally, carbon fiber with the completely wrong material to use in constructing the whole of the vessel and they knew or should have known this ahead of time and simply ignored it once again.
I think most of this was due to the arrogance, narcissism, and ego of Stockton Rush, the CEO of the company that built this thing. Thing. Rush was so blind to the defects in his own reasoning, but he actually went along for this ride and died as a result along with four other people.
I consider this horrible event to be the result of the psychiatric illness of Stockton Rush. This is a very sad example of how deadly some psychiatric illnesses can be.
