+1 yMy second job when I retired. Either to work on a cruise or live on it for some time.
I am planning to sell my home. Then live on a cruise. When I come back, I go on another cruise. :) I love the idea.

DO NOT !!! PLEASE.
Being a guest on a cruise ship and being a staff are two completely different worlds, the latter being HELL. All those smiling faces live in the worst conditions and the contractual obligations are brutal. - +1 y
@HaveNoName oh no…that makes me feel so sad. Did you work at one?
- +1 y
@lightbulb27 hehehe I promise, we won’t do that.

For us as a family, the preferred means of vacatoning is crusing. It is THE BEST bang for buck and the most enjoyable way to visit destinations without the pain of booking hotels, renting cars, thinking about eating amd then partying all day and all night without having to drive anywhere.
We have been on multiple cruises with various cruise lines. - +1 y
@HaveNoName what are their contractual obligations? They prob. room everyone in bunk beds/
- +1 y
Living conditions is one thing. Guests are not allowed to. see that. Thyletbare normally at the lowest levels of the ships where their potholes are barely above the water.
What is worse is the lengths of your contact. It's not like you go to work and then go home at the end of the week. You get stuck with the ship for 6 to 8 months without any leave in the middle. They don't even get to see their family for all that time. - +1 y
I don't mean to discourage you to not do it at all. Perhaps you can try for once and then decide for yourself.
- +1 y
@HaveNoName 6-8 months is too long in the sea. Yet they are always smiling. Always entertaining us. I also wonder if they are compensated well… they charge a lot for gratuities. I wonder if they are truly happy.
- +1 y
Or a job/opportunity that they will not get otherwise in their own country.
- +1 y
I guess they get paid ok. Cannot be something that can make them rich though. And yes, they do rely a lot on gratuities. Some portion is built in with your cruise package. Perhaps generous people give over and above too.

@HaveNoName Thank you so much for the education. Happy Cruising :)
Thanks Coach - +1 y
My pleasure. But please don't give up on your dream based on this one random old fart guy on Social Media. Research a bit and see what real people have to say.

+1 yI'm sure all of the stops would be amazing since I've never been out of the United States, but part of my enjoyment in life is seeing my friends and family in their own element. Even if all of our close friends and family will join us, it would not be in the setting that we are accustomed to seeing each other and enjoying each other's company.
tiny sidenote, I would not be able to go exploring on any of my favorite bikes.10 Reply
+1 yMaybe as a form of retirement, but working on one would be hard. Like, not even working for the actual ship but like working on the ship. You have no internet so you have to use their computers, which just makes remote work suck ass
20 ReplyWait. I might have misunderstood the question. Do I get pain 30k a year to live on a cruise ship or does it cost me 30k a year to live on a cruise ship?
12 Reply- +1 y
No you have to pay lol
+1 yDoes it come with all the food and amenities at no extra cost?
11 Reply- +1 y
if it did would you?
+1 yMaybe for a few months but not for an entire year. The cruise lines had to crack down on elderly people trying to do that. They became too much of a handful. Not to be disrespectful to the elderly, but their needs can be greater and take more time from the crew.

Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yNah. But this would probably appeal to somebody like my sister when she reaches retirement. She's one of those people that have to be out and about every damn night. She over commits. I know she loves cruises so this sounds like it'd be perfect for her and her husband.

we both are sometimes. :P
+1 yI'd consider that, if it were during the fall/winter months. I could easily work from a boat if there was wifi.

+1 yA houseboat by myself… maybe… a cruise ship, yeah no
10 ReplyId certainly consider it as a retirement lifestyle. See the world. But I'm guessing 30k doesn't include all expenses

It’s definitely not 30K. I did a wee bit of snooping and it’s roughly 70k for the basics for one person. 😆

I have the article link above lol

🤣 that’s where I did the snooping after I calmed now my excitement.
