What is meant when a guy says he isn't hitting on you?

I have this really good guy friend, who I've known for 4 years and gotten really close with this year, and he said to me out of no where one night that he wasn't hitting on me. What was meant by this? Does he like me more than friends?!

well it could be either he thinks that you might like him and he doesn't like you more than a friend so he's making it clear that he's not hitting on you meaning that he's just playing as friends or he doesn't want you to get the impression that what's he's doing is flirting/hitting on you romantically..so no I don't think he likes you more than just friends

  Well I would think the same thing but after that night, we were out and after telling me he loved me he kissed me on the eye then moved to lips. and we've kissed before, so this is where I get confused haha.

  That's what I was thinking because he kissed me the next night on the eye then moved to my lips, which we've kissed before, I just didn't know what to think or get wrong idea.
