What does it mean when a guy says you are his companion?

I have been dating this guy for almost a year and we have a really good friendship between us. I want to take it to the next level and commit to being with only him but he is not ready yet because of previous relationships gone wrong I guess.He says that I am a good companion and that someday we will be living together etc.what does he mean when he says I'm his companion? what does that imply?

We are no longer speaking to each other because it seems now that I don't have my own place anymore he does not want to come around like that, I live with my parents now. I don't get how we can know each other this long and he leave me like that.

Once I get into some financial trouble he could not even be a good friend to me and help me out.I just invested all that time in an a$$hole.I did everything for him inside and out of the bedroom.why are all men jerks?
