My ex broke up with me almost three years ago. He wanted to stay friends (which initially I said no but after about nine months I was cool with it). Recently, it seems like every time we talk it turns into some type of debate. He gets mad at me if someone tells me something before he tells me or stupid stuff like that. I don't want to be with him anymore and I really do want to be his friend. We don't talk a whole lot and when we do I would like it not to end in a debate. What's his deal?
I'm actually dealing with the same ex wanting to be friend fighting ever time we talk thing. My solution and it works quote well now . . Is that I flat out told him that I hated fighting ever time we talked that I would love to be his friend but if we are going to have an argument ever time we talk regardless of who starts it I can't take it. I also said that I wasn't going to change so if it was me "provoking" him that the best thing was to not talk. So now what happens is if i'm in a bad mood that day and he starts to push buttons I just tell him that he's starting to get to that point and if he keeps going I stop talking sometimes for a few days it has lasted 2 months before. In the end though you are who you are and he doesn't have the right to make you miserable everyday so take control of the situation I know how hard it can be since you did care about them. I'm sorry to say this but he's just one of those idiots. He's broken up with you and what's to be friend yet he still has the feel for being revengeful on you or dislikes something about you.
Maybe he finds you annoying or he just wants to win everything.
What's the point in staying friends if he's going to do that? You might as well go back to saying no.
