Ditch him or give him another chance?

So this guy and I met a few months ago at an accepted students day for a college. We just started talking (online and text) and he suggested hanging out. We were supposed to tentatively hang out Saturday (he wasn't sure if he could), and my mom told me today that we had tickets to a sports game that is very in demand so I decided to invite him. He called me for the details and kept a convo going for a good 20 minutes. He asked his mom and then said he actually had work that ended at the time the game started (he tried to find a replacement but the only other kid's birthday was the day of the game) and was "so upset he couldn't go and it wasn't okay." He also said that he really wanted to go just to see me. So obviously I was bummed and I wondered if he made up this work for god only knows what reason. But he said next weekend he can't wait to see me, etc. and texted me the rest of the night, talking about normal things and mentioning how upset he was he couldn't go. So does it sound like a load of BS and should I just forget about him or should I give him another chance for a date?
