Does my pen pal like me?

I have a sort of like a pen pal relationship with this guy I interact with over email. He lives in Europe, and I in the states.

We've been in touch for over 6 months. Sometimes, I get the feeling that he's into me, maybe I'm reading in too much.

but recently he has said that "he needs a girlfriend".

what does he mean? Is he simply wanting to discuss about how he wants a girlfriend or does he want a committed relationship or etc, etc?

I doubt that he's hinting at any romantic possibilities between him and me since we live like thousands of miles away from each other.
