I'm planning to, as soon as I graduate, go off to the army. My girlfriend whom I've known since I was a little kid is worried and is begging me not to go. She's my life and eventually I'm thinking I want to marry her and normally I would have thought nothing but to stay with her but I've had a past record with drugs and I won't be able to get a good job because of it. I want to be the best man I could ever be for her and I can't do that unless I go through the army. I wouldn't mind going but the look my girlfriend gives me makes me rethink all this. How should I tell her that I'll be joining the army anyway. I don't want her to worry.
First of all, I commend you for making a great decision to improve your life. This is a great sign of maturity. Let's forget about your girlfriend for one moment. I think that since you're trying to get yourself on a good path in life that you need to do what is best for you. You have had some issues in the past and you want to better yourself. This needs to be your primary goal. If you see an opportunity then you have to snatch it because you may not get another chance. As you get older and mature, you will be able to see and understand that there will be times that you will have to do what is best for you and your life.
Now, let's discuss your girlfriend. Yes, I know you both love each other and you see a future with her. If she truly loves and supports you then she needs to be strong and let you join the army. This is going to be best for you and that should be the centralized point here. Yes, a military job is stressful and there are drawbacks like going to the field, deployment, training, moving around etc. However, it's all part of the job and if you both want to be together than this is something that you can both deal with. Perhaps when you're stationed somewhere she can find a college near by and attend. Maybe you can get an off post apartment and move in together while she works or attends school. There are other options here.
I have given you a lot to consider so the decision is yours. Good luck.
before you get her all worked up, find out 100% that you're eligible to join the armed forces. I have a friend who was dead-set on joining the Navy and then she went to recruitment and she was reject because of her mild, well-controlled, asthma. there's quite a bit of fine print, so when push comes to shove, you might do an interview with a recruiter and find out that you're not even allowed to be in the Army. but when you do have to tell her, I don't think there's really a gentle way to do it, you're gonna be gone a looooong time and your girlfriend is going to try and change your mind and perhaps even feel like there was something that she could have done to keep you here.
