What?
What does "tone" mean as opposed to strengthen?
What?
hmmm.almost the same
When you tone your stomach, you're focusing more on how it looks.i.e. defined muscles, hard and firm.while strengthening (which happens naturally when you get toned) is more about how powerful your muscles are. I think the two go together.
If you wanna tone your abs, here's a really great exercise--
with both legs parallel, lie flat on the floor with your head about 5 in. off the ground. Bring your legs up about 45 degrees, making sure your head doesn't touch the ground. Lower your feet, but don't let them touch the ground. Repeat as many times as you can stand lol. As you keep doing this (doing it in the morning is best for muscle tone and growth) you will find it gets easier and easier (which means you're stronger) and you will look better too! My abs are my trouble spot, but they don't bother me any more lol.
good luck! try it--it works.
Okay, strengthening is upping your weights for your workout. Whereas toning is increasing the number of reps you do at one weight. Toning is working out a muscle group to have definition without adding bulk. Think Arnold Schwarzenegger as bulky back in the 80s. If you look at celebrities like Uma Thurman, Jessica Alba, Jessica Simpson (before Dukes of Hazzard then after, she toned up for the movie without adding bulk).
Hope this helps.
Ooooooooooooooooooooooh. That makes more sense.
But if I'm doing crunches. . .
Increase the number of crunches you do. Or, for a more intense workout, there's a machine called the Captains Chair. Basically you hold yourself up on your elbows, and bring your knees up like you're sitting in a chair. It's a wicked hard work out on your abs. Also you could try another machine that you put your ankles under pads and you're suspended to do your crunches. It takes more strength to do that one than regular crunches on the floor. Or you could ask a trainer at a gym.
Your muscles can only do two things, Grow bigger or get smaller.
When working out:
1. Muscle growth = more calories then burned
2. Losing mass = Burning more calories then taking in.
It's that simple.
Don't fall into the idea that 30 reps of 5lbs dumb bells is good for you, it's more of a waste of time. You don't have to lift like you are training for a body building competition but have enough resistence to where 10 reps is a good struggle.
In the end, it's about burning more calories then you take in.
Toning is doing lower wieght and more reps (lets say 15 lbs at 20 reps, 3 times) which sculpts your body. ie making more muscle show instead of flab etc.
Strengthening is doing more weight with less reps (30 lbs with 10 reps, 2 times) helps you gain muscle mass, and go up in weight you can support.

tone means to sculpt your body so instead of wanting to lose inches off your stomach you would be tightening the skin, burning the fat in the wrong places, and building a small amount of muscle. To strengthen would mean more of like body building or being able to lift heavy weights and gaining a lot of muscle.
Hire a competent, reputable personal trainer and do what s/he tells you to do.
