What does it mean when my boyfriend always mute me on the phone when someone talking in the background. basically he's hiding something right?

When you say mutes you do you mean where he can't hear you or where you can't hear him? I usually mute myself to the other person so that they can't hear someone else maybe saying embarrassing things or being annoying then I find a private place and unmute it. Maybe he isn't hiding something maybe he's preventing self embarrassment. If you are suspicious however, just ask. Dont be blunt so he doesn't think you dont trust him but kinda, sneak it into conversation somehow.
