Usually the phrase 'opposites attract' refers to the dynamic between two partners in their relationship. They're so different from one another, yet the relationship works somehow. It's intriguing and I'm experiencing that right now.
Usually people wouldn't want to be in a relationship with someone so similar to themselves. Mostly because you'd see your own flaws in the other person. So you usually end up with someone who's pretty different from you, but you share the same basic values so you're still compatible.
Opposites attract and tend to work personality-wise. Usually one person is very dominant and social and the other is more submissive and slightly less inclined to be a social butterfly.
Good luck.

For me it's only true in the way that I'm attracted to masculine behavior (a guy watching the game with his friend and NOT a guy who wants to take me shopping). Also I like to get into a little argument from time to time, it spices things up. But when it comes to important things, I'd rather have someone who has the same principles and ideas.
I think it generally stands for personalities. (although I don't believe in this "rule", opposites in general don't attract for example; an attractive person will attract attractive people, a slut will attract a man whore, etc. And say if this rule was true, then why do couples often have so much in common?)
