Why is it acceptable to be fat in America?

there are so many overweight people, that when I actually see someone that is a healthy weight, they appear to be unhealthily skinny compared to all the people around them. This is a little unnerving to me that healthy weight is no longer the average weight.

Why have so many people gained weight in America? And why is it being viewed as ok? Also, do you think a certain gender has gotten on average fatter then the other?

I know it's acceptable. I ment why aren't people choosing to be skinny? There are many health risks linked to being over weight.

I myself don't want to be fat, and I don't agree with people who think its ok, but that doesn't mean I have a personal vendetta against fat people. Just because I don't agree with somebody doesn't mean I don't respect their right to their own opinions. People can do whatever they please whether I agree with it or not. That isn't my decision to make. I knew this question wouldn't be met happily, and I'm not going out of my way to hate, im simply curious. Sorry if I came across as other wise.

It is not very accepted by society, and it comes with health risks.

I think it happens, gradually, over time. And the main reason is society. We used to live in a world with a shortage of food (and it is so unevenly shared that some people still live this reality). So our bodies and brains are decided ton binge when we have the chance. Now, however, we live in a world with an excess of food (and stuff masquerading as food). But our minds and bodies are still the same. Problem.

Add to that the fact that technology has made us sedentary, and that most of what we consume has little to do with actual food.

its not so much that being fat is acceptable, its that free choice to do what you want with your body is acceptable... even things that are long-term harmful.

I think that we should "accept" obesity in the sense that we don't body shame people for being fat because it isn't attractive.
But we shouldn't celebrate it, normalize it, act as if it isn't an issue just to spare feelings.

Being overweight is unhealthy, but even our non overweight citizens are very unhealthy. Our food is shit. Most of us aren't properly nourished but we're certainly overfed. That needs to change, but it won't.

I will add though that we don't need to aim to be skinny. Skinny implies that you're underweight. That's not necessary for health.

It's not acceptable. People body shame, which is rude because people don't know how to control their diet. There are fattening restaurants everywhere, and people don't have the money to buy organic foods. Also, we are so enthralled with technology that we don't get out a lot to exercise. But really, why to people care if someone is overweight? It's nobody's problem but their own.

There are five restaurants on each block, and fattening food like KFC, and McDonald's are much cheaper than wholesome foods. People don't have money.

You don't choose to be skinny like you don't choose to be fat. Are you stupid or what? There's so many factors in it and it's not just about America. There's a lot of cultural, environmental, behavioral, physical, and psychological factors that determine whether or not a person is 'fat' or 'skinny'. Why should you even care unless you're talking about the appearance of someone you love or someone you want to physically be with? It shouldn't unnerve you at all. It's not your problem and it doesn't concern you. Don't act like your superior to some people just because they have a slow metabolism, just because they're too insecure to go to a gym, just because they can't afford a salad to a sandwich.

Fast food is cheap and easy. Plus unlike a few hundred years ago, you don't need to be 100% fit to survive anymore. Plenty of jobs in the world where you just sit at a desk all day.
