What do you guys think about girls who skin bleach, and the affects that skin bleaching can have?

I'm against it, and I can't believe people would do something like this knowing the horrible side effects just to be socially accepted.

From the nytimes article: “Sociological studies have shown among African-Americans and also Latinos, there’s a clear connection between skin color and socioeconomic status. It’s not some fantasy. There is prejudice against dark-skinned people, especially women in the so-called marriage market.”

It's sad that they succumb to the pressure to lighten their skin purely for socioeconomic gain.

I know it is. If they embraced the way they are and tried to fight prejudices in the right way maybe people would start seeing darker skin in a more positive way.

I know, but the truth is.. it's a hard and long battle to fight and most people may not even change their minds long after the ones fighting now are past the 'so-called marriage market'.

It's horrible that people feel so much pressure to do crazy things like this. These have to have horrible and dangerous chemicals in them and I'm sure it has to hurt. People are so beautiful just the way they are. I wish they could see that too.

I think products that bleach skin are no good too. Wanting to have an even complexion, and wanting to get rid of scars from acne from something else is fine, but doing it to your whole body is outrageous. Unfortunately with societies beauty standards today skin bleaching is becoming more common. :T

I use bleaching cream on my scars so I'm for it. I don't agree with the abuse of it, the counterfeits, and the homemade ones. You should only get it from your dermatologist. I don't know why so many people refuse to go see one.

People do stuff like that all the time.
People tan. People smoke cigarettes.
It's not like people who bleach their skin think that it's good for them.
I don't judge people for tanning, smoking, doing drugs, eating junk food, getting plastic surgery, or whatever.
So I can't really say anything about people bleaching their skin other than the fact that it's sad (depending on their reasoning).
I'm not "for it" and I won't say I'm "against it" either.
