Until the last... 120 years or so people always had a split sleep schedule. They would sleep for a few hours, wake up and do stuff, and then go back to sleep. When you wake up in the middle of the night it's usually your brain wanting to go back millions of years of evolution.

It's probably when you're coming out of your REM cycle. You're most vulnerable to waking in that short time frame
Your body clock got off. You've fallen into a bad sleep pattern. EVERY night as your going to bed tell yourself it 10 P. M. I don't need to get up for 10 hours. Sleep straight until 8 A. M. I will sleep straight through. Try that for a couple of weeks.
It doesn't mean anything, it happens to many many people. Just go back to sleep.
You can take advantage of it and pursue sleep paralysis. It's so fun :D
