This is directed to Caucasian people, but how come when food like chinese/italian/indian etc is called ethnic food, but food like burgers, fries, hotdogs, are not called ethnic (at least I have never heard them referred to that), when Caucasian is an ethnicity.

to the people who answered, do you get offenend when someone calls you caucasian? do you correct people, and insert how many numbers of ethnicities you are?

I guess I shouldn't have said caucasian is an ethnicity, but why are people saying there are different races?

It's not about race but about culture. Burgers, fries, hot dogs, etc, while they may have been invented in other countries, are decidedly American in how we treat them. They're the food at baseball games, football games, and 4th of July celebrations. They're, as the saying goes, "as American as Apple Pie." In the restaurant industry, it is referred to as "Continental cuisine."

And no, caucasian is not an ethnicity.

My race is caucasian. My ethnicity is Irish, Italian, and German primarily. Get the difference?

And regarding the update, no, I don't get offended. There is nothing to correct for the reason I stated above.

Caucasian is a race, Italian is an ethnicity, french is an ethnicity... Race and ethnicity are not the same things. Not all white people have the same historic culture. They have different traditions depending on where in Europe the came from. You can't just lump us all together. That is a pretty racist thing to do.

Races are distinct genetically divergent populations within the same species with relatively small morphological and genetic differences. Physical anthropology does recognize several races. They were established during early biology when much of the classification of species was taking place, and biologists were attempting to find common ancestors of humans.

If you think there is no such thing as race, then you should not use the term Caucasian... There is no country or region or tribe of Caucasia... It never existed. It is a race classification. I'm personally a mix of English, Czech, German, Swedish, etc. Each of those cultures or ethnicity is very distinct from the next. They all speak different languages, they have different traditions, different types of food, dance, art, etc.

They are all different ethnic groups, but most of them fit in with the same anthropological race.

You're the one asking race and ethnic questions. You made it an issue. I want to be called by my first name by friends, and my full name by people I do business with. You can call me Sir if you like. Outside of that, I do recognize the difference between race and ethnicity. They are different concepts. Just because they are ways of dividing people, does not mean I'm going to stick my head in the sand and pretend they do not exist.

on some job applications it asks you what your ethnicity is, do you just say call me sir?

If you want to be ignorant that's fine. I'll point you to the dictionary so that you maylearn new words and the semantics behind them. I have things to do today. Have fun with your race baiting or whatever. I explained the difference and answered your question. If you'd pull your fingers out of your ears you might actually learn something and become a bit more tolerant.

I have a chance for a lunch break so I will explain something to you. First, if you actually have a skill you don't fill out an application. You submit a resume or CV to a potential employer. Second, the only reason there is any mention of race on application forms is because of affirmative action in order to benefit people who are seen as underprivileged. You don't need to check anything on the application. All it does is help to give you a better chance if you happen to be one of those...

The reason why some applications state it as ethnicity, is because they need to include native American populations separately as their own grouping due to historic issues.

Coming from a white girl herself, its call ethnic food because we are in America. If we were in China eating burgers, we would call the burgers ethnic food and no I don't get offended when someone calls me Caucasian, that's what I am, but to be honest, that term is not used much anymore, "white" is.

Caucasian isn't an ethnicity. That's like saying black is an ethnicity. I'm candian. Apple pie is Canadian. Hot dogs are European as are fries. So I'm not sure at what you're trying to get at. Americans don't have any completely original food. And even so, saying that it's "ethnic food" for caucasians is redic.

I'm considered "caucasian," but I'm Irish and Greek. I'm sure that would be considered ethnic. Look up what "caucasian" actually is and you'll see that many white people aren't "caucasian."
