Running to lose "bulk"?

I have a "bulky" body. I'm a little overweight right now, but due to soccer, I've always had very thick thighs and calves, and I HATE them. If I start running daily, I know I will lose weight, but will it also reduce the bulk and give me leaner muscles like I want?

Anything else I can do to get lean legs?

Also, what type of running should I be doing? Distance, intervals, should I avoid uphill running?
