Mine lasted months and didn't go away even after using a drugstore product twice a day as recommended, switching socks, drying off my feet after every shower and, of course, wearing flip flops at the gym and to the pool. I caved in and went to my local clinic and got prescribed a giant tube of cream (stronger than what is sold at the drugstore). It took about 3 weeks until it went away completely (with application twice a day, AGAIN!), but it never came back afterward. I'd say, if it doesn't go away on it's own and you're willing to commit to applying something twice a day, start off with the real thing (prescription) and don't waste your time with drugstore products. It'll save you the annoyance and frustration of keeping this routine for over a month.

Most of the commercial preparations actually work. The problem probably is you're going barefoot at the gym, or you are not drying off your feet very well, or both. If you don't do these things, you'll have a recurring problem.
Just go to the chemists and buy the proper anti-fungal cream.

Tea tree oil, mix it with a little lotion and apply twice daily.
Just going on a guess, but I bet baking soda would work. Wash your feet with it, and put some in your shoes.
You've found a really great site.
Apply those.
