I have never fenced but I take Karate. Cups are mandatory for guys in Karate, but they don't always wear them because they're so restrictive.
I don't know why wearing a cup would result in any embarrassment. We already know how sensitive guys are there. It's just not a secret.
I think you're better off with it because if you get tapped there that's when most girls might laugh at your predicament.
If I was a guy, knowing what I know just from Karate, I would wear one even to work, school, etc.

I don't think it matters what the girls think. My brother fences and he has to wear a cup. He wears all the protective gear. There was an Olympic fencer who didn't think he needed to wear the protection and he was stabbed through the outer layer and ended up dying of infection. This wouldn't have happened had be been wearing the protection. I couldn't imagine getting stabbed down there and getting an infection and dying because of it lol
Safety first. Impressing the opposite sex... way last.
All guys should wear cups. I once accidentally hit a guy down there during kickboxing. He had to be carried away and now all the guys wear cups

Women’s cups are a lot more subtle, so chances are the girls were wearing cups and you didn’t see them. You should absolutely wear a cup, though. If you’re afraid of the girls knowing that you are vulnerable to groin injury, you should know that a woman’s crotch is extremely fragile as well. If you so much as graze a woman’s cup, she might drop to the floor, just the same as you’d expect of a man. There’s no shame, regardless of gender, of protecting the most sensitive part of your body. The difference is, when women do it, men can’t see because of the flat shape of female groin guards. Basically, wear a cup because the girls know they’re just as vulnerable and weak as you down there so there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. I’m a martial artist and I’ve seen women carried away in stretchers because of seemingly light hits to the vulva. I saw an athletic woman in her prime vomit on the floor and writhe in pain from a groin punch from an 8 year old just last week while teaching him a self defense maneuver. Personally I think women should wear cups everywhere we go. I know I prefer the feeling of armored safety, no matter how much comfort I have to compromise. Vaginas are fragile, as are balls. We need to compensate for our flawed anatomy.
The mature ones will understand that you're just projecting your junk and make no comment.
Maybe some guys don't have much to protect.
