That depends on the guy and the situation.
To give you an example, I was talking to a woman the other day and she said lmfao in response to something I said. In a tongue-in-cheekly childish way, I said something like, "Ha ha. Made ya laugh!". She then told me that no, it had barely made her smile. In other words, people sometimes type things out of habit and may not mean anything by them.
As for your guy sending you just a smile. It could mean that many things:
-He was busy at the time and typed something quickly in response.
-He didn't know what else to type and did that out of politeness.
-He liked what you had to say and it genuinely made him smile.
-He liked what you said enough that it made him laugh.
-He loved what you said and it really really made him smile.
So, guess what. The only way that you can really know is to ask him yourself. If he was smiling, it's most likely a good thing, so don't be afraid to ask.

absolutely nothing... that's what he wanted to say, and yet although it says nothing its still accepted as a polite response. the ultimate in "ive had enough of this convo sweetheart"
He's happy and is trying to be cute to make you smile. Maybe he hopes you remember that.
That you should hang it on the refrigerator. Congratulations! =)
I take this to mean he has no interest in conversing with me at all. I would never respond with only an emoji to someone I liked even a little. To me it's the same as getting a "k."
I use the ";-)" smiley as a sign of flirtation...not sure how many others guys do that too.
He's smiling...stop trying to look at anything deeper
It doesn't mean anything. I do it all the time. See :)
You just got an "A"
