Is Truth The New Hate Speech?

Stephen10

The further a society drifts from truth the more it will hate those who speak it.

- George Orwell

This is something that seems to be commonplace today--a total lack of care for truth. I have always been very passionate about truth, and on a few occasions I've had to swallow my pride and change my beliefs whenever I discovered that I was wrong about something. However, it seems that so many other people, whether Christian, Muslim, atheist etc, don't care about truth and are determined to be willfully ignorant. It's a bit like bringing an elephant into the room and everyone in the room claiming that they can't see it, even when the elephant is in front of them.

For example, some years ago in the UK there was a debate on TV. It was to do with gangs that were grooming and abusing young girls in care homes. And although I admit that there are many white men who are pedophiles, these specific gangs were all Asian or Islamic. A man on the TV show had the guts to say that these gangs were Asian men of Muslim origin, and the audience booed and berated him. He never even implied that all child abusers are Asian or Muslim, he just told the truth that these specific gangs that were grooming and abusing young girls were Asian men of Muslim origin. He told the truth, plain and simple. If the gangs happened to be all white men, I doubt he would have been booed for saying that all these pedophile gangs were white men. This is just one of many examples.

Another thing I have noticed that is very common is people will try to twist your words. You make a statement, and then people don't even pay attention to what you say and just reply without even trying to understand your point. Usually you have to repeat yourself multiple times before people actually start paying attention to your statement. It's as if they don't even pause to think. They just jump to conclusions.

Another very common thing I've also noticed is that people will often look for excuses to remain in denial by pretending to be stupid. For example, if I debate a feminist and I argue that family court laws often discriminate against fathers, the feminist often says, "No they don't; show me the evidence." That's just like me asking a feminist to show me the evidence that men commit rape more than women. Some things are just common knowledge. We don't always need evidence. Some things we just know instinctively. But what I've noticed is that many people today pretend to be stupid or ignorant and demand hard evidence. For example, if I were to say, "Give me some evidence that fruits and vegetables are a healthy food," it would be silly, because my common sense should already tell me that it's healthy. Do you see what I'm getting at? If people don't want to believe something, they just switch off their brains and demand hard evidence, even if it's common knowledge.

In order for our society to be more civilised and advanced, truth should be something that is loved, not hated.
